We can think of a labourer as the backbone of any project. Not only will you be required to perform basic tasks, but the fact of the matter is that this role will often open up additional employment opportunities. Let’s take a quick look at some basic job information as well as how you can place yourself in the best possible position.

The Basic Job Details of a Labourer

Here are some details to keep in mind:

The entry-level salary is approximately £17,000 pounds per year. Those with a great deal of experience can expect to earn as much as £20,536 pounds (according to the latest statistics).
This is generally a full-time position (between 35 and 40 hours per week) and overtime is often an option.

What is Expected of You?

The basic role of a labourer will differ between each position. However, there are still some general tasks that you are required to perform on a regular basis. These include:

  • Transporting materials to and from a job site.
  • Performing manual tasks such as digging trenches and loading equipment.
  • Regularly reporting to the site supervisor or foreman.
  • Preparing and/or cleaning a job site.
  • Adhering to the proper health and safety regulations.
  • Providing experienced professionals with help when required.

It is always a good idea to read the job description in question in order to learn what might be expected of you.

What Qualities Will Help?

There is no doubt that the position of a labourer is associated with physically demanding tasks. Some of these could include lifting heavy objects, climbing ladders, loading equipment and generally serving those in higher positions. So, you should be in decent shape and you should possess a good work ethic.

You should also be ready to work extra hours if required, as this is necessary on occasion. It is therefore a good idea that you have your own form of transportation or at the very least access to public options such as a bus or a train.

Other useful qualities include good hand-eye coordination, excellent balance and the ability to follow directions without complaining. As this is a highly competitive role, those who have these assets will tend to excel.

How Can You Find the Appropriate Qualifications?

This will once again depend upon the role that you are applying for. However, it is always a good idea to apply for what is known as the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS). Once you have met the requirements, you will be provided with an official card. This illustrates that you appreciate what the role entails. In turn, it is more likely that you will be hired by a reputable company.
