My first love letter and how I became a postman

I have the most romantic job in the world. I’m a postman delivering letters, happy and sad, to people on a daily basis.

I can make someone extremely happy just by putting an envelope through their letter box, and that gives me great satisfaction. My love for letters first started with my first love.

I was just 14 years old, and I was in love with a girl who lived just three doors down from my house. I was a shy, quiet child and didn’t have the courage to ask her if she wanted to come on a date with me, so I wrote her a letter. It was five pages front and back, and mentioned all the things I thought were beautiful about her, her hair, her smile and how kind she was.

But I was too scared to deliver it. I had the letter sat on my desk for weeks and weeks and would just stare at it everyday. One afternoon, my mum asked me what I was going to do with that letter. It was addressed to Simone, my crush, and just sat there. I said, I was too scared to deliver it to her in case she saw me at the door, because it was a love letter.

She tried not to giggle, and told me there was a way that I could send it anonymously. I could post it. Why I hadn’t thought of that!? I took it to my local post office, saw the counter assistant stick the stamp down and off it went with the postman. I always wondered about my first letter’s journey through the postal system. How long would it take for the postman to deliver it? What would it see on its way?

Simone received the letter and wrote me a posted letter back saying she wasn’t interested, but that she loved the letter. We became friends and that day on that’s how I communicated with all of my lovers. My wife and I still send letters to each other, even though we live in the same house and I am her postman!

There’s nothing like a letter to say I love you. That’s why I’m a postman.
