Being a student is awesome; great friends, great bars and hey, maybe you even love what you’re studying. But money can be a big problem. If you want to make the most of student life without having to suffer a Pot Noodle diet (we’ve all been there), you’ll need extra cash. There is a whole world out there and you just need to figure out what excites you. If you need a little help to to figure out how to start, we are here for you. So here are our top tips for finding that perfect part-time job.
Being job-ready means:
It’s never too early to look for a part time job.Start looking even before you arrive at university. As soon as you’ve accepted your place, get your “Hire Me” pants on. Don’t worry – you don’t need to make a ton of calls or send a load of CVs out. That’s old school, and not in a good way. Simply check out who’s hiring in the university location using our clever little Job Today app. (Ok, we’re biased but we love it when students get fab jobs through our app. We’re like proud parents. *wipes away tear*).
Another great source of part time work is the student job shop at your university. You’ll find openings at your student union as well as in campus cafes, libraries and shops. Sign up to the vacancy lists and apply quickly.Don’t forget to check if your course has links to local businesses through its placement schemes, as there’s no harm in taking the initiative to ask about possible part-time roles.
If you don’t want to work fixed hours, try working in the catering or hospitality sector. You’ll be offered more flexible hours that might suit you better. You’ll be able to pick the hours you’d like to work; some weeks you might have more time to work than, say, during exam time.
If your course is too intense for you to think about employment during term time, go for a full-time holiday or seasonal job. It’s kind-of part-time, in that it’s not forever, but it’ll give you the opportunity to build up some savings ready for next term.
Did we say this already? Ok, we know. This is our baby and we love it. But we’re proud that thousands of students are using it to find a part-time job that suits them. It’s the quickest way to search for a part time job, and it gives you the opportunity to chat with your potential employer to see if they (and the job) are right for you.
