Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) perform a variety of tasks to provide basic patient care, including:
Monitoring vital signs: Taking and recording a patient's blood pressure, temperature, and weight
Providing basic care: Helping patients with bathing, dressing, and eating
Administering medication: Giving medications as prescribed by a physician, under the supervision of a registered nurse or physician
Documenting care: Recording patient history and maintaining health records
Communicating: Reporting patient concerns and status to other medical professionals and family members
Assisting with procedures: Helping with phlebotomy, IV set-up, and other medical procedures
Preparing patients: Preparing patients for discharge or transfers
Managing emergencies: Managing emergency medical situations
Training new personnel: Participating in the training and orientation of new staff
