Job Summary:
The Payroll Accountant is responsible for managing and processing employee payroll while ensuring accuracy, compliance with laws and regulations, and timely reporting. This role works closely with HR and finance teams to maintain payroll records, handle tax filings, and support audits.


Key Responsibilities:
Process payroll for employees on a regular schedule (weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly)
Ensure accurate calculation of wages, overtime, bonuses, and deductions
Maintain and update payroll records, including new hires, terminations, and changes
Prepare and file payroll taxes in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations
Reconcile payroll accounts and resolve discrepancies
Coordinate with HR regarding employee data and benefits deductions
Generate payroll reports for management and accounting purposes
Ensure compliance with labor laws, tax regulations, and company policies
Assist with audits and provide necessary payroll documentation
Handle employee inquiries related to payroll, taxes, and deductions
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
Proven experience in payroll processing or accounting
Knowledge of payroll systems and accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, ADP, SAP)
Strong understanding of payroll tax laws and compliance requirements
High attention to detail and accuracy
Excellent organizational and time management skills
Ability to handle confidential information with integrity
Preferred Skills:
Experience with multi-state or international payroll
Familiarity with labor laws and government reporting requirements

Reporting to the Controller, this role will be helping to build the processes around core accounting operations while ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and consistency across all workflows. The Senior Accounting Manager will own critical components of the monthly close and key areas including revenue, COGS, A/R, A/P and general ledger activity. This is a highly hands-on role, ideal for someone who can seamlessly shift between high-level technical strategy and detailed execution in a fast paced, lean environment. This role will be based out of our Williamsburg, Brooklyn office and follow Van Leeuwen's hybrid work model and be in office three days a week. Job Responsibilities • Daily Accounting Operations, • Manage and execute core accounting activities including journal entries, account reconciliations, and general ledger maintenance, • A/P Management, • Oversee accounts payable processes, including invoice processing, vendor management, and payment runs, • A/R Management, • Manage accounts receivable, including billing, collections, and cash application, • Month-End Close, • Support and help drive the monthly close process, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timeliness across all assigned areas, • Inventory & COGS Support, • Assist with inventory accounting, cost tracking, and reconciliation processes in partnership with the Controller and Operations, • Process Improvement, • Provide recommendations to the Controller to improve internal controls, automate manual workflows, and build out the accounting tech stack, • Reconciliations & Controls, • Prepare and maintain balance sheet reconciliations, • Support internal controls and documentation, • Participate in monthly balance sheet reviews with the Controller and CFO, • Audit Support, • Assist with audit preparation, documentation, and coordination with external auditors., • Cross-Functional Collaboration, • Work closely with FP&A, Operations, Supply Chain and other teams to ensure accurate data flow and financial reporting Job Requirements • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA strongly preferred), • 5 to 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, • Experience in CPG, food & beverage, multi-unit retail, or manufacturing is a plus, • Strong experience with A/P, A/R, general ledger, and month-end close processes, • Hands-on experience with NetSuite or similar ERP systems, • Deep understanding of U.S. GAAP, inventory/accounting principle, multi-unit environments, • High attention to detail and strong organizational skills, • Startup DNA: comfortable with ambiguity.
