Hello! At Factorial, we're looking for an Engineering Manager who wants to get their hands dirty - someone who leads teams but stays close to the work, understands the domain deeply, and cares about shipping things that actually matter. We're at an interesting moment. AI isn't a feature we're adding to our product - it's changing how the product works. That means rethinking how we design and build software from the ground up, moving from deterministic systems to AI-powered workflows that help real businesses run better every day. It's genuinely hard, and it's genuinely exciting. If you're someone who gets energy from working closely with the business, growing engineers around you, and using AI not as a buzzword but as a real tool to build better products faster - we'd love to meet you. Ready to be part of the challenge? About the team Our Engineering team is the engine behind Factorial, crafting the tech that makes HR simple, fast, and reliable for thousands of companies. If you love solving hard problems and want to build something that truly matters, come build it with us. We're a team of 200+ Product Engineers building Business Management solution that actually works for the people using it. Our core stack is Ruby on Rails and React but the interesting work right now is what we're building on top of that: agentic workflows, LLM-integrated features, systems that behave probabilistically rather than deterministically. We believe that strong fundamentals, adaptability, and the ability to leverage modern tools, including AI are what truly matter. What are we looking for? You bring both leadership experience and a modern, AI-native engineering mindset. - You've managed people before and helped engineers grow, ideally beyond your own level. - You've been part of hiring processes and have a track record of bringing strong people into your teams. - You're comfortable working across teams and contributing to shared platform and service foundations. - You engage in honest, Socratic discussions focused on finding the best solution, not winning the argument. Experience and Technical Depth - 5+ years as a Full-stack engineer or similar role. - 3+ years leading engineering teams. - Strong experience designing APIs (REST, GraphQL, etc.) and building integrations. - You understand scalability, performance, and quality as real constraints and have dealt with them in production. Business Mindset Being a great Engineering Manager at Factorial means caring about more than the code. You understand the business context behind what you're building and can connect technical decisions to real outcomes for customers and the company. - You're curious about how the business works and use that understanding to make better technical calls. - You push your team to understand the problem deeply before jumping to solutions. - You think in terms of customer value, not just technical deliverables. - You're comfortable talking to stakeholders, asking hard questions, and challenging assumptions when something doesn't add up. - You know when to ship something imperfect and when to slow down and get it right. AI-Native Engineering and Product Mindset We expect Engineering Managers to lead teams building AI-powered products, not just use AI tools on the side. - You treat AI as a core part of modern software engineering, not something you bolt on at the end. - You've built or contributed to AI-powered features or workflows that made it to production. - You know what good AI development looks like in practice: defining behaviour and success criteria before you build, measuring output quality, grounding systems in real data, designing workflows that can take safe and auditable actions, and knowing when to keep humans in the loop. - You use AI-assisted tools to move faster in your day-to-day, whether that's coding, testing, debugging, or documentation. - You can help your team review, validate, and safely ship AI-generated code and behaviours. - You understand the real limitations of LLM-based systems: hallucinations, evaluation challenges, data sensitivity. - You create space for experimentation and fast learning loops within your team. - You spot opportunities where AI can genuinely simplify something complex and create real value for users. What You’ll Be Doing? - You'll start with a buddy who guides you through some non-critical tasks to get comfortable with the codebase. - You'll learn the business, the full customer journey, and work with the team to draft a roadmap. - You'll join weekly team meetings to discuss priorities and bring new ideas to the table. - You'll review the RFCs your team produces, give feedback, and push for the best way to get things done. - You'll hire as the team grows, making sure we bring in people who are both talented and good-hearted. - You'll constantly look for ways to improve how the team works. - You'll run weekly 1:1s focused on the development and well-being of each person on your team. - You'll work with other engineering managers to coordinate initiatives that cut across teams. - You'll help lead the shift to AI-native product development, not by mandating tools, but by setting the example, asking the right questions, and creating the space for your team to experiment and learn. - You'll convince or get convinced. You'll hear that a lot. How We Work (Barcelona, Madrid or A Coru ñ a Office) At Factorial, we believe the best products are built when people come together, in person to collaborate, challenge ideas, and move fast. That’s why our Engineering Teams follows an office-first, flexible schedule. We work on-site several days a week, using that time to connect, align, and innovate as a team. However, we also understand the importance of focus and flexibility, so we support remote work when it makes sense - whether for deep work, personal needs, or just a change of scenery. This balance helps us stay agile, creative, and closely connected, while giving everyone the space to do their best work. At Factorial we don't evaluate you by years of experience but by your knowledge and skills. We use our Career Path with a rubric framework where we define what is expected for each experience level and skill. This framework allows you to know your current level and what you need to keep growing. We love transparency, so our Career Path includes the salaries for each level, which we share during the first interview to ensure alignment. Our Hiring Process 1. Intro Call → Chat with our Talent Partner about your journey and goals. 2. Hiring Manager Interview → Deep dive into your product mindset, teamwork, and problem-solving. 3. Live Challenge → A collaborative technical exercise based on real-life problems. 4. Final Coffee Chat → A relaxed conversation with our CTO & VP of Engineering to explore our vision, culture, and your growth. And that’s it! Feel free to request any other conversations you want, with team members or to address specific concerns at any time in the process. The whole process is remote, using videoconferencing tools! About Factorial Factorial is the AI for Business that knows companies, connects how work happens across the business, and turns that context into action. Founded in Barcelona in 2016, we now have +1,700 employees serving more than 16,000 companies across 112 countries. Factorial started with a simple idea: companies were spending too much time managing processes and not enough time doing the work they were hired to do: their best work. But as companies grow, work gets more disconnected. More people, more tools, more information, and more time spent connecting the dots. Generic AI can answer questions, but it doesn’t know your company. Every time, you have to give it the context. Factorial is different. Because it’s inside the company, it already knows how it works, including its people, processes, policies, and data. So you can ask it to do real work, from screening candidates and managing expenses to answering questions and creating reports. AI isn’t the goal. Giving people back their time is. When work changes, so do we. We believe in diverse talent: we welcome applicants from all backgrounds and strongly encourage people of diverse experiences and identities to apply. We believe in inclusion: we are committed to equal opportunities and actively promote workplace inclusion of people with disabilities. If you would like to learn more about our inclusive recruitment processes, you are welcome to indicate so optionally and we will share additional information with you. Our Values We own it: We take responsibilit...
