Workshop Metalworker / Fabricator / Bench Operative Location: West London Job Type: Full-time, Permanent Hours: 8.00am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience and capability About Us James Gilbert & Son is a long-established London manufacturer of high-quality bespoke decorative metalwork, founded in 1881. We produce decorative grilles, vent covers, frames and related architectural metalwork for clients in the UK and abroad. We are a small, reputable, quality-focused business carrying out specialist hands-on workshop manufacture. Our work is practical, precise and finish-driven, and we are looking to strengthen our workshop with a capable new team member. Important – Please Read Before Applying This role is intended for candidates with genuine recent hands-on experience in a manufacturing workshop, fabrication shop, assembly environment or similar practical production setting. Decorative metalwork experience is not essential, but applicants must have relevant experience involving the making, assembly, fitting, finishing and accurate measuring of physical products using tools and equipment. This role is not suitable for applicants whose experience is mainly in office administration, retail, hospitality, driving, delivery or other non-manufacturing work, unless they also have directly relevant workshop or production experience. The Role We are looking for a skilled or semi-skilled workshop metalworker / fabricator / bench operative to join our team. This is a hands-on manufacturing role involving the making and assembly of lightweight decorative metal products. The work includes measuring, cutting, assembly, use of hand-held tools, finishing processes and general workshop tasks. Depending on your experience and ability, the role may range from assisting with production through to taking responsibility for more complete pieces of work. This is not simply a basic labouring role. We are looking for someone who can bring practical ability, reliability, accuracy and pride in their work, and who can help raise the overall strength and consistency of the workshop. Relevant Backgrounds May Include • fabrication, • light metalwork, • bench work, • sheet metal work, • workshop assembly, • architectural metalwork, • welding and finishing, • shopfitting or joinery-related manufacturing, • signmaking, • prototype or modelmaking, • set-building, • Assist with the manufacture and assembly of decorative metal products, • Measure accurately and prepare components for production, • Cut, drill, assemble and finish items to a high standard, • Use hand-held tools and workshop equipment safely and competently, • Support general workshop operations as required, • Learn our specialist decorative metalworking methods and processes, • Recent experience in a manufacturing workshop, fabrication, assembly or similar practical production role, • Good manual dexterity and confidence working with your hands, • Experience using hand-held tools and workshop equipment, • Ability to measure accurately and carry out simple maths calculations, • Care, accuracy and attention to detail, • Reliable attitude and good work ethic, • Decorative metalwork experience, • Fabrication or light engineering experience, • Experience polishing, finishing, colouring or otherwise working with visible finished surfaces, • Experience producing high-quality items where finish and appearance matter We are not only looking for the most junior candidate available. We are open to someone more capable who can justify a higher rate through stronger skills, better reliability and the ability to contribute more quickly and effectively. Equally, we would consider a strong semi-skilled candidate from a related background who shows excellent practical aptitude and the right attitude to develop.
