Want to use your engineering skills to genuinely help the planet? My client operates in the clean energy space, with a clear mission to significantly reduce carbon emissions across both residential and commercial environments. They’re looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join the team and work across the full product life-cycle, covering design, development, engineering analysis and design for manufacture – seeing concepts through from initial idea to production. This is an opportunity to play a hands-on role in developing real-world technology that makes a measurable environmental impact. The Role Working as part of a multidisciplinary R&D team, they will take ownership of mechanical design activities across new and existing products. This is a highly varied role, combining creative concept development with rigorous engineering analysis and practical manufacturing implementation. They will be involved from early-stage ideation through prototyping, validation, and into full production - ensuring products are robust, cost-effective and optimised for manufacture and installation. Key Responsibilities • Design and engineering of new and existing products with a strong focus on Design for Manufacture (DFM), • Selection of materials, manufacturing methods and production locations, • Creation and maintenance of bills of materials and parts lists, • Engineering analysis including stress and strain calculations, supported by FEA, • Conducting risk assessments and FMEA activities, • Evaluating and improving manufacturing, assembly, installation and servicing processes to reduce cost and increase reliability, • Hands-on prototype building, testing and design problem-solving, • Producing documentation for installation, servicing and maintenance regimes, • Ensuring compliance with relevant safety and testing standards (including CE marking and Machinery Directive considerations where applicable), • Supporting ongoing engineering changes including substitute parts, suppliers and subcontractor management, • Managing assigned projects and work packages through to completion What They’re Looking For • 2:1 or above in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline (BEng or equivalent), • Experience in a production or engineering design role within a manufacturing environment (SME experience highly beneficial), • Strong 3D CAD skills (SolidWorks preferred), • Good 2D CAD capability (SolidWorks preferred; AutoCAD beneficial), • Experience with FEA and mechanical analysis, • Practical, hands-on ability to build and test prototypes, • Knowledge of MRP/ERP systems advantageous, • Experience working with subcontract manufacturers on bespoke assemblies desirable, • Understanding of structured DFM methodologies and Lean/5S/Kaizen/Poka-yoke principles beneficial, • Interest in expanding skills into programming, firmware, C+, or web-based tools welcomed, • Full right to work in the UK and a valid UK driving licence (or equivalent permitted licence) Why Join? • Work on technology that directly contributes to reducing global carbon emissions, • Full product lifecycle ownership – not just incremental design tweaks, • High-impact role within an agile and growing clean energy business, • Opportunity to influence product direction and manufacturing strategy, • A technically challenging environment with real-world engineering problems to solve If they’re looking for a role where their mechanical engineering expertise translates into meaningful environmental impact - this is a rare opportunity to do exactly that.
