Location: Dagenham Contract: 3‑month temporary contract, with strong potential for extension Rate: £22.02 per hour PAYE or £28.71 per hour Umbrella Hours: Full‑time, including occasional weekends and public holidays (rota-based) The London Borough of Barking & Dagenham is seeking a proactive and experienced Street Cleansing Day Supervisor to support the Street Cleansing Operations Manager and lead a multi‑skilled team of drivers and cleansing operatives. This role is essential in ensuring the delivery of a high-quality, efficient, and customer‑focused street cleansing service across the borough. You will take responsibility for day‑to‑day supervision, resource planning, service quality, and operational delivery. A key part of the role includes completing handovers with the evening supervisor to ensure seamless service continuity. Key Responsibilities Supervise and coordinate a multi‑skilled team of drivers and operatives to deliver high‑quality street cleansing services. Manage all line management duties including regular supervision, appraisals, sickness monitoring, return‑to‑work interviews, performance management, and referrals to Occupational Health. Respond promptly to enquiries from Councillors, Partners, and Residents, ensuring efficient resolution and excellent customer service. Handle complaints professionally, providing full feedback and escalating complex situations when needed. Produce, analyse, and utilise performance and resource data to drive improvements and support effective decision‑making. Maintain accurate records of incidents, accidents, investigations, and customer feedback. Work proactively with internal teams and external partners to optimise service delivery. Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, Council policies, health & safety requirements, and best‑practice standards. Carry out and review inspections, risk assessments, and ensure all health & safety responsibilities are met. Deliver staff training where required and conduct timely appraisals aligned with Council policies. Support out‑of‑hours requirements including weekends, bank holidays (with applicable enhancements), and emergency standby cover when needed. Work flexibly during adverse weather conditions as directed by management.What We're Looking For Essential criteria include: A current and valid Category C or C1 driving licence. Strong knowledge of the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974. Working knowledge of the Clean Neighbourhood and Environment Act 2005 and the Environment Act 2021, including NI195 grading and reporting. Previous experience in street cleansing operations within an urban environment. Experience monitoring staff safety, managing accidents/near misses, and conducting risk assessments. Excellent communication and leadership skills with the ability to motivate and manage a frontline operational team. Confidence in resolving customer enquiries and delivering high-quality public services.General Responsibilities Ensure all work complies with Council policies, GDPR/Data Protection, Equalities & Diversity standards, and Health & Safety legislation.
