He is able to use some Makaton signing, although he can sometimes be reluctant to do so, so the successful candidate will need patience, excellent communication skills and the ability to encourage interaction in a calm, positive and consistent way. Like many people with communication difficulties, he can sometimes become frustrated when he is unable to express his needs, wishes or feelings. On occasions, this frustration may present as behaviours of concern, including physical aggression. With patience, consistency, positive behaviour support and the right relationship, he responds extremely well and is able to build strong, trusting connections.
