Job Description BronxWorks helps individuals and families improve their economic and social well-being. From toddlers to seniors, we feed, shelter, teach, and support our neighbors to build a stronger community. The Living Room is the BronxWorks central location for its adult homeless services. BronxWorks operates three 24-hour programs that include a drop-in center, a 50-bed safe haven for chronically street homeless adults, and our borough wide mobile street outreach program. All of the programs provide direct services to street homeless individuals in the Bronx including case management, food, clothing, emergency shelter, referrals to NYC shelters, and permanent housing placement. RESPONSIBILITIES • Abide by Department of Health and OSHA regulations regarding proper kitchen hygiene and maintenance, • Ensure that quality and quantity of food meet standards for meal patterns established by designated regulatory agencies (i.e. USDA, CACFP, etc.), • Receive and inspect incoming food products for quality, quantity, and ensure prompt and proper storage, • Supervise and participate in the requisition, inspection, preparation, cooking and portioning of food in accordance with the NYC nutrition standards, • Participate in menu planning with the nutritionist and medical director, • Prepare meals accurately according to the menu and recipes, • Recommend menu changes to improve quality of food, • Supervise and coordinate activities of staff engaged in food preparation, meal service, and cleanup, • Ensure safe handling and proper temperature control of prepared foods, • Supervise packaging and delivery of meals to the Living Room and Pyramid, • Maintain and report meal service data, • Maintain monthly inventory, • Submit food orders to vendors in a timely manner, • Ensure security of refrigerators, freezers, food storage areas, • Ensure cleanliness and sanitation of kitchens, • Supervise and participate in the training of cooks, • Conduct inspections of Living Room and Pyramid kitchen facilities to ensure cleanliness and proper food storage, • Attend relevant BronxWorks and outside trainings, • Perform additional duties as assigned Program Specific Responsibilities • Provide direct supervision to all Living Room and Pyramid kitchen staff QUALIFICATIONS • High School Diploma or Equivalent, • Two years’ experience managing a kitchen, • Valid Food Protections Certificate, • Proficiency in the safe operation of all kitchen equipment and Department of Health regulations, • Supervisory experience preferred, • Valid driver’s license preferred, • Proficiency in the safe operation of kitchen equipment, • Proficiency in Department of Health regulations, • Knowledge of New York City nutrition standards PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS • Ability to use a computer for prolonged periods., • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds., • Ability to stand, walk, or sit for long periods of time, or climb five flights of stairs, if required to conduct home visits and/or fieldwork., • Ability to bend and retrieve objects and/or documents., • Ability to travel in the boroughs of New York City and its adjacent counties via public transportation., • Ability to travel for a minimum of 1 mile within a reasonable amount of time and in all types of weather, including inclement weather, if required to conduct home visits and/or field work.
