A young gentleman decided he wanted to become president of the United States, after his business attempt failed in 1831. He went for it, and ran for the Illinois State Legislature the next year and lost. In 1833, his second business failed and in 1836 he suffered from a nervous breakdown. He was defeated again as House Speaker in 1838, for Congress in 1843 and lost again in 1848, despite winning a few years earlier. His failures in politics continued throughout the 1850s, until in 1860 Abraham Lincoln was finally elected President of the United States.
