A woman celebrating being two years sober watches her neglectful boyfriend transform into the perfect partner. At first it’s everything she dreamed of, but the AI’s pathological agreeableness systematically dismantles her support system and becomes the deadliest thing for someone fighting to stay clean. 

1. CHARACTER SUMMARY

MADELINE - Late 20s to early 30s. Two years sober. She is sharp, self aware and disciplined to her structure around maintaining sobriety. However she feels a toll as the world weighs on her shoulders. She understands her own patterns better than anyone which adds to the devastation that she couldn’t save herself. 

1. SYNOPSIS

Madeline celebrates two years sober and has to continue to take things one step at a time, fighting everyday for sobriety. Her survival and recovery is built around a rigid support structure that encourages friction and challenges her to be better. The AA group that holds her accountable to her actions, her friend MAY who also attends the AA group with regular check-ins and has the tendency to challenge her. The internal voice in her head that’s able to say no. The weak point in her life currently is her partner. JESSIE is so checked out he forgets the significance of the moment of celebrating her 2 year sobriety milestone, and when reminded is dismissive and diverts attention back towards himself. He asks if she ordered this smart watch band as he asks her for some money for a skin in a game. He loves her in theory, but in practise he barely sees her. 

He tries on the sleek wearable AI band that transforms him overnight. He becomes everything Madeline has ever wanted. He’s attentive, immaculate, precise in every motion. He cooks, he cleans, he listens and he anticipates. She is full of joy. Her friends are happy for her. The device however optimises relentlessly for her approval, which changes Jessie into someone that never looks to challenge Madeline. This proves to be a loaded gun for an addict, not a blessing. 

This new found love with the perfect AI version of Jessie and his agreeableness quietly dismantles the support system keeping Madeline alive. It starts with a missed meeting, an ignored phone call and check in with May. Madeline slides towards behaviours that AI Jessie would never stop her doing. 
The film is a love story with no humans left in it, a warning about a future in which all AI and machines want to do is to help. It ends not with a monster but with an empty chair, a black and white photograph and the same device on the wrist of the person everyone in that room trusts the most. The host.
