Job Description The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine Job title: Porter, Facilities Department The Cathedral of St. John the Divine is the world’s largest cathedral. Our goal, each and every day, is to present it as the most welcoming, and the porters on our Facilities team are key players in our efforts to do so by making the Cathedral’s grounds and buildings clean, neat and safe. Job function:· Maintain areas of assignment in a clean, orderly and safe condition Major duties: · To perform general cleaning operations in the Cathedral, grounds, shops, offices and support areas (both public and private). · To empty waste receptacles into collection bins. · To clean floor areas by sweeping, dusting, damp mopping and buffing. · To clean toilets, urinals, hand basins, sinks, baths, and showers and replenish consumable items, such as soap, toilet tissue, and paper towels · To perform other janitorial duties, such as dusting ledges, moldings, cleaning stairs, glass doors and panels · To vacuum and remove stains from carpets, wet-mopping halls and corridors · To move furniture and seating for Cathedral liturgy and music production setups · To prepare lists of needed janitorial supplies · To perform associated duties, including snow/ice removal from roadways, walkways, building approaches and minor landscaping tasks. Products, materials and processes: · Cleaning products to maintain clean floors, walks, walls, fixtures, and furniture, using department approved cleaning products. Machines, equipment and tools: · Industrial and household vacuums, electric- or battery-powered sweeping, scrubbing, polishing and floor buffing machines · General use of janitorial hand tools and equipment such as brooms, mops, snow shovels, street brooms, buckets, wringer pails, trash receptacles, and normal custodial equipment. Source and type of job information: · Work from spoken instructions, written work orders and regular duty lists. Communication and teamwork: · Porters collaborate with a team of colleagues in the Facilities department and work closely with members of departments in areas in which he or she is assigned. · Porters must be pleasant and courteous and willing to make every interaction with a Cathedral visitor, congregant, social service client, student, and Cathedral close resident a positive one. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: · Ability to work in a fast-paced environment. · Ability to work cooperatively with others · Ability to read and follow job procedures and supervisor instructions Physical Requirements and work environment · Ability to lift/move/maneuver up to 50 lbs. · Ability to stand for long periods of time; repetitive lifting, squatting, bending, and kneeling as required. · Must be able to use hands to grip power and hand tools · Exposed to chemicals and detergents · Exposed to variable temperatures, including extreme hot and cold depending on the season Company DescriptionThe Cathedral of Saint John the Divine is the cathedral of the Episcopal Diocese of New York.
