The Cure Violence model is a community-based public health approach to preventing gun violence that is replicated in numerous large cities around the country and internationally. This program will focus on a defined area identified as a program service area in Brownsville, Brooklyn for shooting violence within the 73rd Precinct. The program works to prevent gun violence by: 1) mediating conflicts that may end in gun violence, 2) changing the mindset of individuals who are most at risk of being victims or perpetrators of violence, and 3) working closely with a broad coalition of local partners to promote a visible community-wide message that shooting is unacceptable behavior 4) helping organize Brownsville Safety Alliance resource fairs with the 73rd precinct to provide additional support to Brownsville residents. THE OPPORTUNITY Staten Island Justice Center (SIJC) seeks to re-engineer the experience of criminal court in Staten Island, New York, by providing judges and attorneys meaningful alternatives to bail, fines, and jail sentences. Operating out of Richmond County Criminal Court and community-based offices, SIJC is a team of social service providers, court-based resource coordinators, mental health practitioners, compliance specialists, and others who seek to improve the quality of justice. Supervised Release offers an alternative to jail by providing pretrial supervision, case management, and voluntary social services to people charged with misdemeanor and felony offenses, and in so doing, uses an arrest as a window of opportunity to change the direction of a participant’s life, avoiding the harmful effects of incarceration. Program participants are monitored to ensure their appearance at court dates and mandatory programming, and receive referrals to services like job training, drug treatment, and mental health counseling. SIJC seeks Case Managers for the borough’s Supervised Release Program (SRP). Reporting to Supervising Case Managers, Case Managers are the front line of service delivery and key to ensuring that the program meets its mandate. Specifically, Case Managers will supervise SRP participants according to their assigned tier and level; work with participants to identify and address barriers to compliance and court attendance; conduct outreach to participants, court stakeholders, community-based service providers, and collateral contacts; connect participants to appropriate services in the community to support their stabilization, and ensure accurate and timely court reporting on participants’ compliance with program requirements.   Job Description Who We Are: CAMBA is a community of staff, volunteers, clients, donors, neighbors and partners who work together to build an inclusive New York City, where all children and adults have access to the resources and supports they need to thrive. CAMBA serves a diverse cross section of New Yorkers from new mothers in Brownsville to job seekers in the Rockaways. More than half of our clients are immigrants and refugees from around the globe. CAMBA’s Cure Violence Program works with 16 – 24 year old at risk youths who are or may have potentially been involved in street violence, community residents, businesses and community-based organizations to implement Cure Violence: The Campaign to Stop the Shooting. Cure Violence is a public health strategy to reduce and prevent shootings and killings. This program will focus on a defined area identified as a “hot spot” in Brownsville, Brooklyn for shooting violence within the 73rd Precinct. The program works to prevent gun violence by: 1) mediating conflicts that may end in gun violence, 2) changing the thinking of individuals who are most at risk of being victims or perpetrators of violence, and 3) working closely with a broad coalition of local partners to promote a visible community-wide message that shooting is unacceptable behavior. Position: Outreach Worker Reports To: Assistant Program Manager Location: 444 Thomas Boyland Street, Brooklyn, NY 11212 What The Outreach Worker Does: • Reach out and market the program to the community via street outreach in order to recruit clients., • Assist in organizing responses to all shootings that occur in the targeted catchment area within 72 hours of receipt of notice of the shooting or killing., • Prepare marketing materials and market the program to community., • Attend and help facilitate social/peer support events (i.e., community events and shooting response meetings, etc)., • Review all documentation establishing clients' eligibility for program and make file copies., • Assist clients in completing all CAMBA intake applications and forms., • Create and maintain client files., • Conduct initial intake or assessment of clients and clients' families and/or periodic reassessments., • Follow-up with clients and with referral organizations regarding client contact and progress with referral organization., • Work with clients to break through barriers to client goals and to assist clients in advocating for themselves and in moving toward self-sufficiency., • Recommend and implement strategies to persuade clients to participate more fully in this process., • Act as client liaison/client advocate with outside organizations regarding such matters as education, healthcare, housing, etc., • Monitor clients' progress toward their goals (dates achieved) via regularly scheduled telephone contact and/or face-to-face home and office visits, and document via progress notes., • Recommend closing of cases in which clients have: (a) achieved primary goals and have maintained stability for a period of months; or, (b) have not demonstrated a willingness to participate in the process (lost-to-service); or, (c) have become ineligible for services (e.g. moved out of area)., • Provide all required information for weekly/monthly/quarterly/annual reports., • May conduct client’s and/or families’ periodic re-assessments., • May schedule appointments for client with referral organizations., • May escort clients to appointments (educational, medical, social service, etc.)., • May assist clients in completing applications for benefits and entitlements. Minimum Education/Experience Required: • Bachelor’s Degree (B.A.) and/or equivalent experience. Other Requirements: • Equally at home conversing with gang members, community activists, law enforcement personnel, and public officials., • Subject to a criminal background check and random drug testing., • No pending criminal cases or prior convictions for sexual assault, child abuse or domestic violence or history thereof., • Strong knowledge of the Brownsville community., • Familiarity with Brownsville 73rd Police Precinct community challenges of teens and young adults there; strongly preferred., • Ability to work a flexible schedule including morning, evening and weekends as needed., • Must have understanding of, sensitivity and commitment to working with families of youth that have experienced gun related trauma., • Case Managers should be prepared for various outdoor weather conditions during their regular workday.   Job Description Essential Job Functions: • Learn and integrate a trauma-informed, client-centered approach, using an anti-oppressive lens, into your work with clients., • Conducts client centered safety assessment and risk management planning. Provides crisis intervention and direct assistance to victims of crime and abuse; develop creative solutions reflecting clients’ unique needs in collaboration with client. • Advocates for clients for public entitlements with systems and other agencies, where necessary, such as obtaining orders of protection, help with hospital/medical related needs, Office of Victims Services compensation, and relocation assistance., • Provides information and referrals and facilitates linkages for clients for services such as shelters, mental health treatment, public assistance and other entitlements based on assessment and clients’ needs., • Assesses for and provides emergency practical assistance for clients including transportation, food vouchers, financial assistance and lock replacement in accordance with agency policy., • Engages in regular supervision meetings with supervisors to review cases, reflect on client interaction and build skills., • Maintains thorough and accurate case records and statistics in web-based case management system., • Collects client data, tests new interventions and tracks outcome.
