Introduction to the vacant position: IBEC Molecular Bionics, Nanobioengineering, and Molecular and Cellular Neurobiotechnology groups, in collaboration with the Autonomous University of Barcelona -Institute of Neuroscience, the San Pau Hospital Memory Unit, and the Achucarro Basque Centre for Neuroscience, are looking for a Research Scientist to work on the design of Alzheimer's disease-modifying Nanomedicines. We will synthesize block copolymers amphiphilic co-polyesters comprising anti-inflammatory metabolites for making nanomedicines to target the blood-brain barrier. We will develop a new approach to cellular targeting based on combining multivalent interactions with steric repulsion to create association profiles based on the cell receptor composition, i.e., its phenotype [Tian et al. Science Adv. 2020, 6, 4 , eaat0919 ; Liu et al. Nature Comm. 2020 11, 4836; and Acosta-Gutierrez et al. ACS Central Sci. 2022,8, 7, 891-904]. We will build on this and synthesize nanomedicines via bottom-up self-assembly, enabling us to precisely control the surface composition and final shape. We will synthesize block copolymers to assemble into spherical or cylindrical micelles by varying the copolymer molecular mass and the final micelle compositions. The contract will be within the framework of the "Alzheimer's disease-modifying Nanomedicines" (ADNano) project prioritized by the IBEC under the "Plan Complementario de Biotecnología aplicada a la Salud" ( biotechnology applied to health ). Introduction to the vacant position: The Smart Nano-Bio-Devices Group is looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher to work on the understanding of the physics of artificial active matter developed in the group, the so-called self-propelled nanobots. The contract will be within the framework of the ERC-Consolidator Grant (i-NanoSwarms), whose objective is to study the development of fully biocompatible enzyme-powered swarms of nanoparticles and study their interactions with biomaterials and biofluids. The successful candidate is expected to greatly contribute to this multidisciplinary team by providing insights in the fluid dynamics and collective phenomena of nanobots, particle to particle interactions, with both -if possible- simulations and experiments. Optimization of microfluidics, engineering of setups for the analysis of the collective phenomena will be sought after in this position. With the candidate's expertise in physics, engineering or fluid dynamics, he/she will be integrated into a running and very active project which spans from chemistry, biochemistry, microfabrication to biology. Introduction to the vacant position: The Biomimetic Systems for Cell Engineering Research Group is looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher to develop his/her project on the development of complex 3D cell culture scaffolds with integrated microfluidics for dynamic in vitro studies. The contract will be within the framework of two different research projects, whose objectives are the development of hydrogel-based three-dimensional in vitro models, using visible-light 3D bioprinting. By combining different cell culture and manufacturing techniques, the main goal is to advance towards more robust and scalable predictive models, for testing and evaluating new formulations for the treatment of IBDs. Main tasks and responsibilities: To optimize the composition of the hydrogel-based scaffolds to sustain cell culture and to recreate in vivo -like structures To evaluate the impact of the printing parameters and determine the optimal conditions for each design To determine the most suitable flow conditions in silico according to the geometry of the model To design and fabricate the different components of the microfluidic chip using 3D printing and rapid prototyping techniques To stablish protocols for the optimal cell culture conditions To perform different in vitro assays to evaluate the stability and feasibility of the system, and assess the quality of the model obtained ( eg the expression of different cellular markers using PCR, ELISA, WB, IF, etc.) Requirements for candidates: Essential: PhD in Mechanical, Electrical or Electronic Engineering or equivalent Multidisciplinary qualifications (Physics/Math's, Physics/Engineering, etc.) and/or knowledge on Material Science (specifically on fabrication and characterization techniques involving soft polymers matrices). The contract will be within the framework of the ERC Consolidator Grant named iNanoSwarms which aims at studying the collective behaviour of active nanoparticles (swarming intelligence), their cooperative motion, and their application as drug delivery systems. Project Overview: Supported by the NIH R01 grant, this PhD project aims to address current limitations in iPSC-based models of the spinal cord by developing and applying ECM biomaterials tailored to specific stages of spinal cord development and disease modeling. The research involves creating structured scaffolds and synthetic matrices to enhance the growth, maturation, and functionality of spinal cord organoids and motor neurons derived from iPSCs. Main tasks and responsibilities: Design and Development: Create novel ECM platforms, including hydrogel-based matrices with bioactive sequences and structured scaffolds, to mimic the physiological conditions of the spinal cord environment at various developmental stages. Introduction to the vacant position: We offer a 3-years PhD position in the framework of the Horizon Europe MSCA-Doctoral Network "Autonomous Scanning Probe Microscopy for Life Sciences and Medicine powered by Artificial Intelligence (SPM4.0)". This project is funded by the European Union (GA: 101168976) and will involve 16 PhD positions distributed in 10 research centers/academic institutions and 3 companies from Spain, Sweden, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Czech Republic and UK. The SPM4.0 Project: Artificial Intelligence is pushing forward the Industrial Revolution 4.0, which is transforming many areas of Society, including Science and Technology. Nanoscopy, a recognized pillar of the research and manufacture of Nanotechnology-based products, is among the areas that more quickly is adopting Artificial Intelligence. Machine learning algorithms are being developed and integrated in microscopes for its autonomous operation and in software toolboxes for the automatic analysis of large volumes of microscopy data. Scanning Probe Microscopy is particularly active in this integration with a special focus in the Life Sciences and Medical fields. Scanning probe microscopes powered by machine learning are expected to enable the autonomous and label-free nanoscale structural and functional (mechanical and electric) imaging of living cells and functional biomolecules in their native conditions, something never achieved in nanoscopic imaging. The objective of the SPM4.0 Doctoral Network is to train a new generation of researchers in the science and technology of autonomous Scanning Probe Microscopes powered by Artificial Intelligence for applications in the Life Science and Medical fields. The researchers of the network will acquire a state-of-the-art multidisciplinary scientific training in advanced scanning probe microscopy and machine learning and in their biological and medical applications. In addition, they will receive training on complementary and transferable skills to increase their employability perspectives and to qualify them to access to responsibility job positions in the private and public sectors. The final aim is to promote the wide adoption of SPM4.0 technologies in public and private research centers and in industrial and metrology institutions and to explore new horizons in the Life Sciences and Medical sectors regarding label-free nanoscopic cell imaging, illness diagnosis, or drug nanocarrier development, consolidating Europe as world leader. The Bacterial infection and antimicrobial therapy (BIAT) group at IBEC: The research activities of the BIAT group at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalunya (IBEC, Barcelona, Spain) () are divided into two main areas: i) applied science to address biomedical challenges posed by infectious diseases and ii) basic research to unravel the molecular mechanisms of bacterial transcription during infections and biofilm formation. The group is dedicated to developing innovative methodologies to treat bacterial infections. Introduction to the vacant position: The Nanomalaria Group is looking for a highly qualified researcher with a synthetic chemistry background and expertise in biological evaluations, particularly in Plasmodium falciparum cultures and the cellular biology of malaria parasites. The contract will be within the framework of one of the research lines of the Nanomalaria Group, whose objective is the characterization of the inhibition of protein aggregation as a novel mode of action of future antimalarial drugs. The available arsenal of antimalarial drugs is insufficient to progress towards eradication of the disease, a scenario that is worsened by the rampant evolution of resistance by Plasmodium . This situation calls for immediate efforts to discover new antimalarials of easy and cost-affordable production, having several molecular targets in the pathogen and acting through new antiparasitic mechanisms not shared by currently used drugs. The bis(styrylpyridinium) salt YAT2150 has a number of properties that make it highly interesting as antimalarial drug, namely: (i) its synthesis is easy and rapid (only two steps), which results in an attractive activity/cost ratio taking into account that its main clinical deployment would be in the low per capita income regions where malaria is endemic; (ii) its mode of action (inhibition of protein aggregation in the parasite) presumably targets multiple proteins, which would likely prevent a rapid resistance evolution by the pathogen, as opposed to most other current antimalarial drugs which target products of one or a few genes; (iii) it belongs to an unexplored chemical family where no other antimalarial has been described up to date, which will prevent the adaptation by the parasite of preexisting resistance mechanisms to currently used drugs; (iv) our preliminary data suggest that YAT2150 might be active against all Plasmodium species causing human malaria, which would make of this drug a pan-malaria treatment; (v) this molecule fluoresces when interacting with its molecular targets in Plasmodium cells, which makes of it a theranostic agent; (vi) it targets (binds) all stages of the parasite in the vertebrate host and in the mosquito vector; (vii) the compound has a long shelf life (months) at room temperature; (viii) it has a low parasite in vitro growth half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) below 100 nM. These characteristics place YAT2150 as a highly promising model for a new generation of antimalarial drugs for the post-artemisinin era, since resistances to this last drug (on which the main current therapeutic approaches are based) are widespread in Asia, and resistance markers have been already identified in Africa and South America. However, the 50% cytotoxic concentration (CC50) of YAT2150 for human cells results in a selectivity index (SI: CC50/IC50) below 100. The perspectives of a successful clinical development of YAT2150 as antimalarial drug will improve significantly if the SI can be incremented to values above 100. Main objective of the project: To obtain YAT2150 derivatives with a sufficiently favorable selectivity index in order to allow this new family of antimalarial drugs entering the preclinical development pipeline. Specific objectives of the project: (i) To synthesize YAT2150 chemical derivatives through the selective modification of different chemical groups in the parent molecule. These derivatives will be initially evaluated for their activity as inhibitors of protein aggregation in vitro and in live Plasmodium falciparum cultures. (ii) Characterization of the activity of the derivatives in in vitro P. falciparum cultures and in human cell cultures in order to obtain the respective IC50 and CC50 and calculate the corresponding SI. Finally (iii), for the derivatives with higher SI, in vivo assays in a murine model of malaria will assess the potential of those compounds for entering a preclinical development process. The objective of the SPM4.0 Doctoral Network is to train a new generation of researchers in the science and technology of autonomous Scanning Probe Microscopes powered by Artificial Intelligence for applications in the Life Science and Medical fields. The researchers of the network will acquire a state-of-the-art multidisciplinary scientific training in advanced scanning probe microscopy and machine learning and in their biological and medical applications. In addition, they will receive training on complementary and transferable skills to increase their employability perspectives and to qualify them to access to responsibility job positions in the private and public sectors. The final aim is to promote the wide adoption of SPM4.0 technologies in public and private research centers and in industrial and metrology institutions and to explore new horizons in the Life Sciences and Medical sectors regarding label-free nanoscopic cell imaging, illness diagnosis, or drug nanocarrier development, consolidating Europe as world leader. The Nanobioelec Group at IBEC: The Nanobioelec Group at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalunya (IBEC, Barcelona, Spain) () is a multidisciplinary research group whose main goal is to develop a multiscale approach to Bioelectricity, covering from the nano- to the microscale. To this end the group combines methods and techniques from Scanning Probe Microscopy, Organic Electronics and Artificial Intelligence, and develops applications for Life Sciences and Medicine. Doctoral Candidate Research Project: The main objective of the research project of the doctoral candidate is to contribute to develop an autonomous scanning probe microscope for the nanoelectrical mapping of living cells and biomolecules. To achieve it the doctoral candidate will Develop a machine learning algorithm to quantify in real time the electrical properties of biosamples from data sets obtained with scanning dielectric microscopy. Integrate the algorithm into an autonomous scanning dielectric microscope for on-the-fly nanodielectric imaging. Apply the algorithm and methods developed to the study of the electrical properties of cancerous cells and single proteins. Requirements for candidates: Essential: Bachelor (BSc) and/or Master (MSc) on Physics/Mathematics/Engineering and related fields with good qualifications marks. Self-critical, capacity to learn and bring knowledge Competencies and skills: Communication, Teamwork, Proactivity, Commitment, Collegiality, Integrity, Critical and Analytical thinking High level of English Advantageous: Background/experience on machine learning is a plus. Programming skills is a plus. Background/experience on scanning probe microscopy is a plus. Eligibility conditions according to the MSCA-DN rules: Candidates must NOT have a doctoral degree at the date of the starting of the contract. Candidates must comply with the requirements for being enrolled in a PhD program in Spain (300 ECTS or Máster) Candidates must comply with the mobility rule: NOT have resided or carried out his/her main activity (living, work, studies, etc.) in the Host Institution Country (Spain) for more than 12 months in the 36 months at the date of the starting of the contract (recruitment date). We Offer: Number of available positions: 1 Working conditions: 3-year full-time employment contract (Starting date between 1st March 2025 and 30th April 2025). An average annual gross salary about 33.583,34 € aprox, (including end of contract indemnity paid at the termination of the contract).
