ppJob Title: Group Leader – Climate, Hydrometeorological and Natural Hazards Modeling (R4)br/Starting date: 01/11/2026br/Closing Date: Wednesday, 15 July 2026 /p h3About BSC /h3 pThe Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC‑CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, and hosts EuroHPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads large‑scale investments and HPC provision in Europe. /p h3Responsibilities /h3 ul liLead research activities on climate variability, climate change, teleconnections, extreme events, droughts, floods, heatwaves, wildfires and compound hazards. /li liProvide scientific leadership to multidisciplinary teams working on atmospheric, hydrological and environmental risk modeling. /li liDevelop strategic research lines aligned with European and international funding priorities. /li liDevelop and coordinate advanced modeling frameworks integrating atmospheric, hydrological and Earth System Models. /li liOptimize large‑scale simulations in HPC environments and coordinate the development of coupled atmosphere‑hydrology‑impact modeling frameworks. /li liDesign and supervise workflows integrating atmospheric, Earth System, hydrological and hydrodynamic models (e.g., MPAS, WRF, WRF‑Fire, CESM2, EC‑Earth, SMAP, SWAT, HEC‑HMS, IBER, HEC‑RAS). /li liDevelop methodologies for heatwave assessment, drought monitoring, flood forecasting, wildfire danger prediction, landslide susceptibility, water resource management, energy‑climate interactions, and advance impact‑based forecasting and climate adaptation services. /li liLead the application of Artificial Intelligence methodologies, including Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Explainable AI and Large Language Models, for environmental prediction, climate services and decision‑support systems. /li liLead the preparation and coordination of European and international research projects, including funding proposals, project deliverables, milestones and stakeholder interactions. /li liFoster collaborations with international research institutions, governmental agencies, civil protection authorities, energy companies and other relevant stakeholders. /li liSupervise postdoctoral researchers, PhD candidates and early‑career scientists, promoting scientific excellence, mentoring and knowledge transfer. /li /ul h3Qualifications /h3 ul liPhD in Atmospheric Sciences, Meteorology, Climate Science, Hydrology, Environmental Engineering, Physics or related disciplines. /li liMinimum 10 years of postdoctoral or equivalent research experience. /li liDemonstrated expertise in atmospheric, climate and environmental modelling. /li liExtensive experience with numerical weather prediction and/or Earth System Models (e.g., WRF, MPAS, CESM, EC‑Earth). /li liStrong background in hydrological modelling and atmosphere‑hydrology coupling. /li liExperience working in HPC environments. /li liProficiency in Python and scientific data processing. /li liDemonstrated record of international scientific publications. /li liProven experience leading multidisciplinary teams and international projects. /li liExperience in operational forecasting centres, climate services and decision‑support systems. /li liExperience in AI applications for climate and environmental sciences. /li liExperience working with civil protection, water management agencies or energy sector stakeholders. /li liInternational research network and leadership in collaborative projects. /li liProficiency in English (written and spoken); Spanish or other European languages highly valuable. /li /ul h3Competences /h3 ul liExcellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills. /li liAbility to define strategic research directions and inspire multidisciplinary teams. /li liStrong project management and organisational skills. /li liAbility to work effectively in highly collaborative and international environments. /li /ul h3Conditions /h3 ul liLocation: BSC within the CASE Department. /li liContract: Full‑time, 35 h/week, open‑ended. /li liBenefits: flexible working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, relocation support. /li liHolidays: 22 days of holidays + 6 personal days + 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement. /li liSalary: competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience, according to the cost of living in Barcelona. /li /ul h3Equity, Diversity and Inclusion /h3 pBSC-CNS is an equal‑opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion.
