Lead Chef — No22 Kitchen & Bar
Streatham, London
No22 is an independent kitchen and bar bringing together great food, good company and community. Our menu combines European favourites with subtle Caribbean influences, serving everything from brunch to evening meals and food for private events.
We’re looking for a reliable, organised and passionate chef to take the lead in our kitchen and become the main point of contact for all kitchen enquiries.
THE ROLE
This is a hands-on position in a small business. You’ll take responsibility for the day-to-day running of the kitchen, working independently on some shifts and alongside a part-time chef throughout the week.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Preparing and cooking dishes consistently to a high standard for regular service and events.
- Managing all food ordering, liaising with suppliers and checking deliveries.
- Planning preparation and stock levels around bookings, normal service and upcoming events.
- Controlling food costs, managing portion sizes and keeping waste to a minimum.
- Maintaining excellent standards of food hygiene, safe storage, cleaning and allergen management.
- Keeping food safety records accurate and up to date.
- Coordinating with the owners and front-of-house team on kitchen enquiries, dietary requirements and event arrangements.
- Organising the part-time chef’s preparation and service tasks to keep the kitchen running smoothly.
- Contributing ideas for seasonal dishes, menu improvements and event menus.
ABOUT YOU
We’re looking for someone who takes pride in their cooking and is comfortable taking ownership of a small commercial kitchen.
You should have:
- Ideally, at least three years’ experience cooking in a commercial kitchen, with experience leading shifts or taking responsibility for service.
- The confidence to manage preparation and service independently.
- Experience with food ordering, stock rotation, portion control and waste management.
- A strong working knowledge of food hygiene, temperature controls, cross-contamination prevention and allergens.
- Good organisation and communication skills, with a calm approach during busy periods.
- Availability for the agreed rota, including weekends and occasional evening events.
QUALIFICATIONS AND DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE
- Level 2 Food Safety in Catering, or equivalent training and demonstrable knowledge.
- Level 3 Food Safety in Catering would be an advantage, given the responsibility for overseeing the kitchen.
- Up-to-date allergen awareness training.
- A professional cookery qualification, such as an NVQ Level 2 or 3, is welcome, although strong practical experience is equally valued.
- Experience with brunch, European or Caribbean-inspired cooking, and catering for private events would be beneficial.
