Title: Guest-Facing Sushi Chef – Te No Te | Handroll Counter
Te No Te is hiring a Guest-Facing Sushi Chef for a small Japanese handroll, snacks, and drinks concept in NYC.
The menu centers on open-faced temaki, Japanese snacks, sake, shochu-based drinks, mocktails, tea, and a warm, focused guest experience. This role is not a hidden back-of-house sushi position and it is not formal omakase counter service. It sits in between: clean technique, warm guest interaction, organized station work, and approachable explanations for guests.
This is a strong fit for someone with sushi, handroll, raw seafood, Japanese restaurant, counter-service, or guest-facing chef experience who wants to be part of a small opening team.
What you’ll do
Prepare and serve open-faced temaki and related sushi/seafood items
Work cleanly and confidently in front of guests
Maintain organized mise en place, product handling, sanitation, and station setup
Explain menu items and ingredients in a clear, approachable way
Support guest flow, pacing, setup, cleaning, receiving, and service needs
Cross-train and help outside one narrow station as the opening team builds systems
Who we’re looking for
Professional sushi, seafood, handroll, Japanese restaurant, or counter-service experience
Comfortable working directly in front of guests
Warm, calm, clean, and organized
Able to work independently in a small team
Flexible during an opening environment
Available full-time or at least 4 shifts per week
Evening and weekend availability required
Compensation
$11.35/hr plus tips. Paid training provided. Sushi Chef shifts have a minimum floor of $150 per shift for four weeks after opening.
