Job Description Position Summary The Instructor & Externship Coordinator provides high-quality instruction in the classroom and laboratory while also ensuring that externship experiences are educationally sound and aligned with program goals. This role actively engages in student retention activities, manages instructional and externship processes, and builds strong partnerships with externship sites to support student learning, professional development, and job placement. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Instructional Responsibilities * Teach assigned courses using approved curricula, lesson plans, and appropriate instructional resources (e.g., instructional technology, guest speakers, field trips, discipline-specific equipment). * Provide students with syllabi, course expectations, and grading criteria at the start of each term. * Develop and maintain an organized, safe, and clean classroom/lab environment. * Monitor classroom and student safety and report concerns immediately. * Grade assignments, tests, and projects within required timeframes and maintain accurate attendance and grade records. * Engage in student retention by maintaining communication with students and administration regarding attendance, academic progress, and concerns. * Participate in curriculum planning, textbook evaluation, and continuous improvement of program delivery. * Attend faculty meetings, in-service workshops, orientations, graduations, and advisory board activities. * Provide annual documentation of continuing professional growth. Externship Coordination Responsibilities * Identify, develop, and maintain externship/clinical site agreements to ensure sufficient placement opportunities. * Conduct orientations for students beginning externship, reviewing expectations, timelines, evaluation methods, professional standards, and compliance requirements. * Monitor student attendance, timecards, and evaluations during externship, reporting progress and concerns to the DOE/Program Director. * Follow up with students who are absent and provide alternative sites if necessary (with prior DOE approval). * Build and sustain strong relationships with externship sites through visits, surveys, and regular communication. * Collect and review student and site satisfaction surveys and ensure compliance with site agreements. * Collaborate with Career Services to facilitate externship-to-employment transitions, aiming for strong placement outcomes. * Support students with resume reviews, interview preparation, and professional development guidance. * Submit accurate weekly externship reports and maintain documentation in both student files and institutional data systems. General Responsibilities * Attend school-sponsored events (e.g., orientations, graduations, award ceremonies, open houses, job fairs). * Support admissions and student services teams by engaging prospective students and participating in retention initiatives. * Ensure compliance with accrediting bodies, state regulations, and institutional policies. * Promote a positive, professional, and inclusive learning environment while fostering trust and respect among faculty, staff, students, and externship partners. * Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director, DOE, or Academic Dean. Skills/Competencies/Qualifications * Minimum of three years of Medical Assisting industry experience; post-secondary teaching experience preferred. * Certified Medical Assisting * Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. * Demonstrated ability to build and maintain community and employer partnerships. * Proficient in computer applications for word processing, data management, and instructional technology. * Dependable, team-oriented, and committed to student success. Classification: Exempt/Non-exempt (based on program and state requirements) Work Hours: 40 hours per week; may vary daily; evening and weekend hours required. Travel: Occasional travel to externship sites. Working Environment: Classroom/Lab and Office/Externship sites.
