Job DescriptionJob Title: Phlebotomist Job Description The Phlebotomist provides skilled blood collection and specimen preparation services while ensuring patients feel comfortable and informed throughout the process. This role focuses on obtaining accurate and sufficient samples with minimal discomfort for patients across a wide range of ages and backgrounds, supporting high-quality diagnostic care. Responsibilities • Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring patient comfort and safety., • Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols., • Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients before performing them., • Match laboratory requisition forms or computer-generated labels to specimen tubes to ensure 100% accuracy., • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols., • Record maintenance data, perform decontamination tasks, and maintain a clean and safe work area., • Update and verify patient information accurately in relevant systems or records., • Package specimens for transport and follow all procedures required to maintain specimen integrity during transit., • Store specimens at the required temperature and place samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes., • Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders related to laboratory tests and specimen requirements., • Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts or orders to ensure accuracy before processing., • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and follow all safety and infection control guidelines., • Wear appropriate attire, including all required protective equipment, while performing duties., • Attend annual department trainings to maintain current knowledge of procedures and regulations., • Answer telephone calls, respond to inquiries, and read laboratory results as needed to support patient care and clinical staff., • Demonstrate proper phlebotomy techniques for pediatric and adult patients as required.Essential Skills, • 2–3 years of experience performing blood draws., • Proficiency in phlebotomy techniques, including venipuncture with straight needles and butterfly needles., • Experience with specimen labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and packaging for transport., • Ability to collect and process specimens from pediatric patients., • Strong administrative skills with excellent attention to detail for matching requisitions, labeling, and documentation., • Ability to clearly explain procedures to patients in a courteous and professional manner., • Understanding of OSHA and DEP regulations and adherence to safety and infection control standards., • Ability to interpret and follow physicians’ laboratory orders accurately.Additional Skills & Qualifications, • Experience processing blood and other laboratory specimens in a clinical setting., • Comfort working with a wide demographic of patients, including children., • Strong communication skills for interacting with patients, clinicians, and laboratory staff., • Ability to handle telephone inquiries and relay laboratory results accurately., • Spanish language skills are beneficial for this role.Work Environment This role is based in a clinical setting with a focus on phlebotomy and specimen processing. The schedule for this opening is Monday through Friday from 12:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., with every other Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The position involves working with standard laboratory equipment such as needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and specimen storage systems, and requires adherence to safety protocols and the use of appropriate protective attire. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
