Position: Volunteer Basketball Coach Organization: Team Phoenix (Nonprofit Youth Basketball Program) Location: NYC Type: Volunteer (Unpaid) Why Volunteer with Team Phoenix This role is ideal for former players or coaches who want to give back, gain hands-on coaching experience, and make a direct impact in their community. Coaches receive professional references, leadership experience, and the opportunity to mentor youth athletes. Requirements: • Prior basketball coaching experience OR former high school or college basketball team member Time Commitment: Weekdays: Availability window between 4:30–9:00 PM (after school) Weekends: Availability window between 10:00 AM–5:00 PM These are availability windows, not fixed shifts • Coaches are typically scheduled up to 10 hours per week or less Locations include: Brooklyn and Queens Responsibilities: • Assist with practices, drills, and games, • Support player development, discipline, and teamwork

Team Phoenix is seeking passionate and reliable Volunteer Youth Basketball Coaches for boys and girls to support our mission of using basketball as a vehicle for personal growth, leadership development, and long-term success beyond high school. This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy mentoring young athletes, teaching the fundamentals of the game, and contributing to a positive, inclusive team culture. Volunteer Coaches play a critical role in creating safe, structured, and engaging environments where youth athletes can develop both on and off the court. What Success in This Role Looks Like A successful Volunteer Youth Basketball Coach: • Builds strong, respectful relationships with student-athletes, • Demonstrates consistent preparation and professionalism at practices and games, • Helps athletes improve fundamental basketball skills, teamwork, and confidence, • Models positive behavior, sportsmanship, and accountability, • Contributes to a supportive team culture aligned with the organization’s values How This Role Fits Into the Organization: Volunteer Coaches are a core part of Team Phoenix’s programming and work closely with the Head Coach, program leadership, and other staff to deliver high-quality youth development experiences. This role directly supports our mission to provide young people with structure, mentorship, and opportunities for growth through sport. • ResponsibilitiesPlan and lead age-appropriate basketball practices focused on skill development, teamwork, and game understanding, • Supervise and coach athletes during games, practices, and team activities, • Foster an inclusive, respectful, and motivating environment for all participants, • Communicate clearly and professionally with athletes, parents/guardians, and staff, • Reinforce team rules, safety guidelines, and organizational values consistently, • Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating leadership, integrity, and sportsmanship, • Support athlete development both athletically and personally, • QualificationsExperience playing or coaching basketball at the youth, high school, or higher level preferred, • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse youth and adults, • Reliable, punctual, and committed to scheduled practices and games, • Passion for youth development, mentorship, and community impact, • CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain) is a plus, • Coaching certification is a plus but not required
