Job Description Our organization is in search of a highly skilled and experienced Physician or an outstanding PhD Researcher (with a clinical collaborator) to take on the position of System Chief for the Division of Infectious Diseases within the Department of Medicine. The perfect candidate will exhibit strong leadership capabilities and a commitment to enhancing clinical and translational research, particularly through NIH funding. The Department of Medicine at our organization secures around $154 million from the NIH to facilitate innovative research across 14 divisions. Reporting directly to the System Chair of the Department of Medicine, the System Chief will oversee approximately 85 full-time and part-time faculty members, along with 22 voluntary physicians throughout the organization. The role encompasses administrative, clinical, research, and educational responsibilities, with a strong focus on the Division's unique contribution to medical education and its ties to the community. The System Chief will also need to be aware of the changing healthcare landscape and its implications for service delivery at academic medical institutions, including off-campus outpatient facilities under our organization. Responsibilities The System Chief of Infectious Diseases will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following: • Comprehensive management of the System Division of Infectious Diseases across various locations, including Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai Downtown/Union Square, Mount Sinai Morningside, and Mount Sinai West, as well as off-campus outpatient sites. This includes creating an academically focused training program, expanding both inpatient and outpatient clinical services, and enhancing basic, clinical, and translational research initiatives. Additional expectations involve ensuring the financial sustainability of the program and elevating the clinical and scientific reputation of the Division of Infectious Diseases. Site Chiefs within the organization will report to the System Chief, in addition to the respective Site Chair of Medicine., • Overseeing all educational activities within the Division for medical students, postdoctoral trainees, and continuing medical education. The educational framework should incorporate bedside training, didactic sessions, conference preparations, and a comprehensive written core curriculum., • Establishing and maintaining fellowship training programs that meet ABIM and Residency Review Committee standards in anticipation of future evaluations. This includes ensuring an adequate patient volume, both inpatient and outpatient experiences, teaching, research, and regular assessments of trainees. The Directors of the Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program will report to the System Division Chief., • Expanding the NIH-funded research initiatives, including leadership in program project or Center Grant applications, successfully competing for NIH training grants, and fostering the development of K (mentored) awardees., • Supporting the professional growth of junior faculty through mentorship and exemplary leadership., • Enhancing both inpatient and outpatient clinical services, including faculty practice and off-site locations., • Ensuring the quality of care in inpatient services, outpatient clinics, and faculty practices., • Managing physician coverage, educational responsibilities, and organizational aspects of the Division's clinic., • Formulating strategic plans for the Division of Infectious Diseases that align with departmental and institutional objectives.Qualifications, • Applicants must possess an MD or MD/PhD, or be a highly qualified PhD., • Eligibility for a New York medical license and board certification or eligibility in Infectious Diseases is required., • Demonstrated leadership experience in academic medicine, clinical practice, or professional organizations is essential., • National recognition in clinical, translational, and/or basic research is necessary., • Candidates should have the experience and leadership qualities to create a vision for sustaining and expanding all aspects of the division's missions while promoting a collaborative and collegial work environment., • High character and the ability to lead by example in a consistent manner are crucial., • Ability to connect with a diverse range of stakeholders, embrace differences, lead effectively at all levels, build diverse networks, and treat all individuals fairly and equitably is required., • Strong interpersonal skills and the capacity to work harmoniously within a diverse academic and clinical setting are essential.Preferred Qualifications, • A history of securing extramural research funding and publishing in high-impact journals., • A demonstrated commitment to quality and safety in healthcare., • Proven facilitation skills, capable of inspiring trust and confidence among diverse internal and external stakeholders., • Willingness to engage broadly across the organization as an institutional leader and serve as a visible ambassador for the division, department, and school of medicine both locally and nationally., • Strong leadership and management abilities, with a proven track record of managing multiple complex programs simultaneously., • Excellent judgment, independent thinking, communication skills, and sound political acumen are highly valued. The salary range for this position is between $350,000 and $500,000 (excluding bonuses, incentive compensation, or benefits).
