PURPOSE
Working across the UK and Ireland, with occasional jobs overseas, you carry out planned servicing, hot zone relines, controls support, and reactive call-outs on vacuum and atmosphere heat treatment furnaces. Most of your time is on customer sites, often on your own, so being self-sufficient and professional matters as much as the engineering. We don't expect vacuum furnace experience: we train that. What we can't train is reliability, sound judgement, and doing the job properly. Every job is documented in full and handed back clean. That is the VAS standard and this role protects it.
THE TWO LEVELS
We are genuinely open to both, as two separate hires. Neither needs previous vacuum furnace experience. The difference is engineering maturity and how much you can run on your own.
Trainee / Junior.  An engineer earlier in their career, or from another hands-on discipline, who works under an experienced engineer, learns the kit and our methods, and builds up to running straightforward visits alone.
Experienced.  A seasoned service or field engineer from any hands-on industry who can already turn up, diagnose, plan the work, and see it through with little oversight, and who will pick up the furnace side quickly. Leads complex jobs and sets the standard for others.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
▪  Planned maintenance, servicing, and reactive call-outs on vacuum and atmosphere furnaces, to schedule and spec.
▪  Fault diagnosis on site and safe, correct repairs.
▪  Hot zone relines on vacuum hardening, brazing, and carburising furnaces, working accurately with graphite, carbon fibre, and molybdenum. Rebuild to the agreed design, not a shortcut version of it.
▪  Electrical fault-finding, and support for controls upgrades including our own VSC+ system, alongside the controls team.
▪  Accurate service reports and full job documentation on every visit, following VAS process from as-found condition to clean hand-back. No exceptions: the paper trail protects the customer and VAS.
▪  Represent VAS professionally on site, in the UK and abroad, work to site rules and our RAMS, and keep the customer informed.
▪  Experienced level also: lead complex jobs, coordinate and mentor other engineers, and feed back to the Service Manager on scope, parts, and cost or timescale issues.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
E = essential, D = desirable
▪  Engineering qualification, electrical or mechanical, or time-served equivalent.  (D)
▪  Hands-on service, maintenance, or field engineering experience.  (E)
▪  Self-sufficient on customer sites: can diagnose, make the call, and manage the customer without close support.  (E, and the core of the Experienced role)
▪  Comfortable being away 2 to 3 nights most weeks, and with occasional overseas trips.  (E)
▪  Valid passport, or able to get one before starting.  (E)
▪  Methodical, quality-conscious, reliable, and disciplined about paperwork, with sound judgement under pressure.  (E)
▪  Full UK driving licence, and physically able to do hands-on furnace work.  (E)
▪  Any furnace, heat treatment, high-temperature, vacuum, or process-plant experience, and electrical or PLC fault-finding.  (D, we train the furnace side)
WORKING ARRANGEMENTS
Field-based across the UK and Ireland, with workshop time at Harvest Fields between jobs. Typically 2 to 3 nights away most weeks, often home midweek, depending on job location. Occasional overseas work for international customers; recent jobs have included Saudi Arabia, France, Germany, Sweden, and Norway. Company van, tools, and PPE provided. Overtime and call-out working as required. Standard VAS benefits, including pension and 28 days holiday including bank holidays.
