We need a digital product lead who knows both ends of app delivery to help us develop and improve our customer-facing B2B data and content apps/products, and help us visualise and dashboard internal data. Ideally you'll have worked in media or agency on customer or internal apps or digital products (such as data presentation, directories or similar products), and have a good understanding and interest in how to drive uptake and commercial success of anything customer-facing, and be able to get your hands dirty on data sources and working in SQL and Azure and PowerBI (or very similar, like Tableau); you might also have worked on web apps and/or be used to CMSs and UIs like Wordpress. We operate a range of digital products, from our customer-facing directory intelligence service Unicorn to our magazine content apps, but we want to do more both internally and externally – such as creating internal products to bring data sources together to help us understand who’s consuming our content, to building microsites and/or apps to deliver our market research data to audience groups. All this digital estate needs developing, managing and maintaining – and creating - by a dedicated digital expert who’s had experience in building and product-managing digital apps, and has a keen understanding of the technologies underlying digital content and data delivery to business audiences. You’ll be deeply involved in the commercial and technical sides of our Unicorn contact intelligence product. You’ll also be at the heart of the development of the digital content app for our flagship media brand, Briefing. You’ll be building dashboards to help us crunch market research data and ideating ways to take that data to audiences. You’ll advise the business on its implementation of digital products for its own use. You’ll be a key member of the team to think about how AI could be used judiciously in the business to deliver outstanding outcomes. You’ll be responsible for helping shape and delivering our digital product strategy, and be a significant stakeholder in Unicorn customer success, go-to-market planning and value proposition definition. Preferred business experience and skills • 2+ years’ digital product experience (eg app developer, product owner, product manager, junior product manager, data journalist or similar) within media, research or software, • Experience of data information products an advantage, • Legal / professional services sector experience an advantage but not essential, • Official/certified training in product management would be an advantage, verifiable in-role training also advantageous, • Experience of working with the full stack of digital technologies that make up data products and apps, from databases/lakes to presentation layers, • A commercially focused mindset Overview The digital product lead is a mix of technical capability and commercial thinking, because eveyr product you’ll work on will either be part of a paid-for service, or itself be the paid-for service, or be building data systems that help us drive revenue. You should be the kind of person who can balance the worlds of technical product development in a highly organised and time-bound manner, and of commercial outcomes with a keen eye on helping the business win and retain clients and deliver added value to paying subscribers. You will in be a team of one but you will not be alone, with access to internal dedicated assistance and outside technical/dev and DPO capabilities, and team growth in the plan as we bring in revenue. This means you'll need to get your hands dirty on the guts of the products and service BAU, as well as being able to think and act strategically. What do we need a digital product lead to do? Here’s a non-exhaustive list Strategic • Understand and communicate to others how the business’s digital products work and relate to each other and to the business’s data assets, • Form an understanding of how innovations and ideas in one area of product development might add value in others, • Form an understanding of how innovations and ideas in product development might add value in other areas of the business, and be alive to opportunities in digital product development coming from activities elsewhere in the business eg events, • Help the CEOs and the SLT to create strategies that leverage outward-facing digital products, and suggest and help design/build internal products that help us make data-led decisions Operational, across all customer-facing products and services • Carry out customer listening with existing clients and prospects to determine what they think of products/services, what would get them to renew/buy, and how to develop the products in line with customer needs, • Be the primary POC for ad hoc and regular contractors working on our customer-facing digital products and services, • Maintain a focus on legal and compliance issues relating to the products, • Work closely with the sales team on prospect targeting and pipeline, • Help the wider business understand what you are doing, how and why, and to communicate product development and commercial progress, • Record and report on business spend relating to products Unicorn - our PowerBI-based contact and company account directory • Hold operational (spend) financial responsibility for Unicorn, • Act as the expert in the room for the Unicorn product with the commercial team, and take part in sales calls and demos with prospects and help get them ‘over the line’ and capture renewals, • Own the Unicorn product roadmap, planning and delivering continuous product improvement, across:, • >> The data points the service should store; including creating the processes to source and build that data, • >> Back-end and front-end improvements, • >> Integration with other Burlington Media platforms, • Manage third parties such as our data verifying/cleansing partner, • Work with internal and external stakeholders on the ongoing development of go-to-market strategy, including creating/being involved in marketing materials and content creation Briefing - our flagship B2B content brand • Be the channel between the business and external solutions providers involved in developing and maintaining the Briefing content app, • Be a part of goal setting and roadmap development for the Briefing content app in line with business and editorial strategy, • Help the team/lead and guide creation of internal dashboards and datasets to understand usage of the app and content, • Ideate and design and even oversee design/build for future digital products that relate to, lie inside of or add value to Briefing content subscriptions Skills we think you will need • Agile working. You’ll need to be able to prioritise work, manage resources, deliver MVPs to scope and iterate based on customer insight. You’ll set and measure outcomes so we are clear on what ‘good’ looks like., • Experience of working within constraints. You can identify constraints, can communicate these to stakeholders and work within them. You will also know how to challenge the validity of constraints and be creative in problem-solving. You can ensure standards are being met while avoiding scope-creep., • Financial ownership. You will understand the need for commercial goals for the business unit and your part in achieving them. You will need to create mini business cases/explanations for spending and developlment. You should be able to prioritise spending based on return on investment., • User focus. You will need to be our user researcher and represent users internally, especially for Unicorn. You understand the difference between user needs and the desires of the user. You can champion user research to focus on all users. You can prioritise and define approaches to understand the user story, guiding others in doing so. You can offer recommendations on the best tools and methods to be used., • Life-cycle perspective. You should be able to manage product phases and recognise when to move from one stage of a product life cycle to another, making sure you bring the business with you., • Operational management. You should know how to design operational processes for the running and maintenance of products or services throughout their product life cycle. You can redesign operational processes, amend existing processes, and plan and put into operation the stages of a new product or service development. You can act as the escalation point for operational issues and can fix complex operational issues. You know how to overcome operational constraints to deliver a successful product or service., • Best practice awareness. You know the fundamentals of product management best practice and how to apply tools, terms and concepts in a variety of ways. You can be flexible, consider new ways of working and adapt to change. You are comfortable at introducing others to new concepts and strive to keep yourself abreast of the best ways of working., • Strategic ownership. You will need to know how to get buy-in from the business. You can work with scant information and explain it in abstract terms. You can develop a strategy for the product over time.
