The Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) is seeking outstanding, highly motivated candidates with an excellent scientific track record for a new Junior Group Leader position in the following areas of specialization: Bioengineering for Personalized Medicine (New diagnostic, modelling and prognostic systems to segment and identify the most appropriate treatment for each patient). Bioengineering for Advanced and Emergent Therapies (Bioengineering to develop therapies for human use based on genes (gene therapy)), cells (cell therapy) or tissues (tissue engineering) and including products of autologous, allogeneic or xenogeneic origin. Also new therapeutic strategies and their development that contribute to offer opportunities for some diseases that so far lack effective treatments. Other relevant candidatures in different areas of IBEC research program will also be considered. Applicants are expected to develop an ambitious project for their future group and to contribute to IBEC strategy based on excellent science, internationalization, translation and talent. Candidates profile : Apart from outstanding scientific output, the candidates must prove that they are active in the application of competitive proposals as principal investigators. Any mobility experience, e.g. a stay in another country/region, will be considered as a valuable contribution. Selection process: Candidatures will be first evaluated remotely by interdisciplinary, internal and external experienced experts. Candidates will present their work, their scientific quality, feasibility of the proposed scientific approach, potential impact of the research, future research plans and their ability to carry out efficient leadership and management. Introduction to the vacant position: The Biointegrated Materials and Engineering Group is looking for a predoctoral researcher to study and develop medical and sustainable solutions based on nanocellulose & Bacterial Cellulose. The contract will be within the framework of Severo Ochoa CEX2023-001282-S funded by MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033. Main tasks and responsibilities: Synthesis & Processing Culture and optimize bacterial cellulose production (static/shaken cultures and bench bioreactors); evaluate carbon sources, pH, oxygenation, and additives. Produce plant-derived nanocellulose (e.g., CNF/CNC) and formulate composite inks and gels. Purify and chemically modify cellulose (e.g., TEMPO or periodate oxidation, carbodiimide coupling) to tailor charge, crosslinking, and biofunctionalization. Hierarchical Organization Assemble materials into hydrogels, thin films, fibers, and aerogels; control architecture via shear alignment, directional freezing/ice-templating, 3D printing, molding, and lamination. Tune porosity, water transport, and mechanical properties for target use-cases (barrier membranes, scaffolds, adsorbents). Characterization & Performance Perform multiscale characterization: rheology, tensile testing, swelling/permeability, SEM/AFM, XRD, FTIR/Raman, and imaging-based porosity analysis. Evaluate stability, sterilization, enzymatic/oxidative degradation, and reusability; conduct biocompatibility screening in collaboration with cell-biology partners. For environmental lines: run filtration and sorption assays (e.g., dyes, metals, microplastics) and assess flux, fouling, and regeneration. Others Maintain rigorous data analysis pipelines (ImageJ/Fiji; Python/MATLAB/R) and versioned protocols for reproducibility. Drive day-to-day experiments safely and reproducibly; maintain cultures, materials libraries, and instrument logs. Coordinate with collaborators in cell biology, microfabrication, and environmental testing to validate materials. Present results in group meetings and conferences; contribute to papers, reports, and grant deliverables. Support lab operations (ordering, equipment upkeep, biosafety/waste management). Introduction to the vacant position: The Biomaterials for Neural Regeneration Research Group at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) offers a fully funded PhD position for a highly motivated student to join our multidisciplinary research team. The selected candidate will participate in the Spinal-TraHumanoid project, an innovative initiative funded by "la Caixa" Foundation, focused on developing humanized models of spinal cord injury (SCI) to study regeneration and evaluate therapeutic strategies. Project Overview: This PhD project aims to develop and compare humanized in vivo and in vitro models of spinal cord injury based on human spinal cord organoids (hSCOs) and vascularized spinal cord organoids (hVSCOs). The research will involve the generation, characterization, and transplantation of hSCOs into immunocompromised rodents to create chimeric human-mouse spinal cord models, allowing the study of human neural integration and response to injury in vivo. Parallel studies will use the in vitro vascularized hVSCO system to analyze injury and recovery mechanisms and to test neuroprotective drugs.Together, these complementary approaches aim to advance translational, non-animal alternatives for drug discovery and regenerative therapy validation in SCI. Main tasks and responsibilities: Organoid generation and characterization: Differentiate human iPSCs into spinal cord organoids (hSCOs) and vascularized organoids (hVSCOs), assessing neuronal, glial, and vascular development using immunocytochemistry, proteomics, and functional assays. Transplantation and in vivo model development: Inject hSCOs into immunocompromised mice to establish human-rodent chimeric models of the spinal cord. Evaluate engraftment, human cell integration, vascularization, and neuronal maturation using histology and advanced imaging. Injury induction and analysis: Induce controlled spinal cord injuries in the chimeric animals and compare the responses with those obtained in injured in vitro hVSCOs, analyzing inflammation, regeneration, and functional recovery. Drug evaluation: Test the effects of neuroprotective and regenerative treatments (including nanoparticle-encapsulated drugs such as Riluzole and Minocycline) in both the in vivo and in vitro systems. Data integration and dissemination: Correlate findings between the in vivo humanized models and the in vitro organoid systems. Present results in publications, conferences, and collaborative meetings with clinicians and patient associations. Requirements for candidates: We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student who is interested in interdisciplinary research in the fields of biomaterials, tissue engineering and neuroscience. Proyecto de Generación de Conocimiento 2022 by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation Introduction to the vacant position: The Nanobiolec Group () is looking for an FPI pre-doctoral researcher associated to the project "High-throughput autonomous multiparametric Scanning Force Microscope for applications in life sciences and medicine" (PID2022-142297NB-I00, BIOMEDSPM4.0). The objective of the project is to develop an autonomous high throughput multiparametric functional scanning force microscope to access simultaneously the morphology, electrical and mechanical properties of living cells at the nanoscale. To achieve it automation and artificial intelligence techniques will be incorporated. The potential of the microscope will be demonstrated with the high throughput physical multiparametric nanoscale phenotyping of cancer cells and with the characterization of nano-drug carriers, such as liposomes and polymeric nanoparticles. This fellowship is associated with the research project Generación de Conocimiento , funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation. The training and research plan for the successful candidate involves: Initial and advanced training in Atomic Force Microscopy, Electrostatic Force Microscopy and Force Spectroscopy for nanoelectrical and nanomechanical characterization of biological samples, such as living cells and/or liposomes. Sequential and correlative structural, mechanical and electrical AFM characterization of cancerous and non-cancerous human cells. Collaboration, with the rest of the research team, in the development of an autonomous multiparametric functional AFM system enhanced by Artificial Intelligence. High throughput simultaneous nanomechanical and nanoelectrical studies of human cancer cells and identification of novel physical cancer phenotypes for medical diagnosis. The contract will be within the framework of the ERC-Consolidator Grant (i-NanoSwarms), whose objective is to study the development of fully biocompatible enzyme-powered swarms of nanoparticles and study their interactions with biomaterials and biofluids. The successful candidate is expected to greatly contribute to this multidisciplinary team by providing insights in the fluid dynamics and collective phenomena of nanobots, particle to particle interactions, with both -if possible- simulations and experiments. Optimization of microfluidics, engineering of setups for the analysis of the collective phenomena will be sought after in this position. With the candidate's expertise in physics, engineering or fluid dynamics, he/she will be integrated into a running and very active project which spans from chemistry, biochemistry, microfabrication to biology. Thus, his/her contribution will be very complementary to the rest of the team and in close collaboration with external collaborators. We are seeking a candidate to work on an innovative project focused on developing advanced extracellular matrix (ECM) platforms for iPSC-derived spinal cord organoids. Project Overview: Supported by the NIH R01 grant, this PhD project aims to address current limitations in iPSC-based models of the spinal cord by developing and applying ECM biomaterials tailored to specific stages of spinal cord development and disease modeling. The research involves creating structured scaffolds and synthetic matrices to enhance the growth, maturation, and functionality of spinal cord organoids and motor neurons derived from iPSCs. Main tasks and responsibilities: Design and Development: Create novel ECM platforms, including hydrogel-based matrices with bioactive sequences and structured scaffolds, to mimic the physiological conditions of the spinal cord environment at various developmental stages. Characterization and Optimization : Perform a comprehensive biochemical, structural, and functional analysis of the developed ECM platforms using state-of-the-art techniques such as mass spectrometry-based proteomics, single-cell RNA sequencing, and electrophysiological assessments.
