County Durham & Darlington NHS Foundation Trust Consultant Rheumatologist The closing date is 23 February 2026 We are looking for two Consultant Rheumatologists to join an enthusiastic and energetic team, providing a comprehensive service to a population of c. 600,000 across County Durham and Darlington in an area with a high prevalence of musculoskeletal disease. The post holder will be encouraged and supported to develop Rheumatology services across County Durham and Darlington specifically through the implementation of a NICE compliant Early Arthritis Service. We provide Day Case and Inpatient care at both Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. Out of hours care is provided by acute and general physicians, so there is no commitment to the acute medical rota; the Trust would be willing to accommodate a dual accredited candidate and adjust their job plan accordingly. The department has an innovative strategy to expand and develop a comprehensive multidisciplinary team of extended‑scope physiotherapists and pharmacists. Successful applicants will be encouraged and supported to develop specialist interests. Key Responsibilities Provide a full range of outpatient rheumatology services and develop areas of special interest Cover internal rheumatology referrals from AMU and other wards/departments Manage rheumatology inpatients and Day Case facilities Establish and lead a NICE compliant Early Arthritis Service Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate medical training Participate in quality improvement and medical audit activities Engage in research and teaching initiatives Provide oversight of nerve conduction testing and DEXA scan reporting There is no rheumatology on‑call service Special Skills & Knowledge Evidence of training in clinical management Understanding of audit and commitment to personal and departmental audit Special Requirements ALS interest in promoting and/or performing research in the Trust Experience Experience in DEXA scan and other rheumatology procedures Qualifications MBBS or equivalent MRCP or previous experience in the country MRCP part 1 Statutory Registration GMC registration This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and requires a Disclosure and Barring Service check.
