Position Overview:Thea Energy is looking for a highly motivated Burning Plasma Scientist to join our Physics team, focusing on modeling energetic particle confinement and transport. In this role, you will run high-fidelity simulations and pioneer the use of Machine Learning surrogates to accelerate our design cycles. You will work directly with our optimization team to ensure our magnetic topologies manage fast-ion loss and heat loads effectively.Key Responsibility Areas: • Execute and analyze high-fidelity simulations using particle-following codes to assess alpha particle and neutral beam ion confinement in 3D magnetic geometries, • Investigate Alfvén Eigenmode (AE) stability using kinetic-MHD hybrid codes and assess their impact on energetic particle transport, • Develop reduced-order models and ML surrogates trained on simulation databases to enable real-time prediction of pressure profiles, • Collaborate with the engineering team to iterate on coil designs and divertor configurations to minimize fast-ion losses, • Develop synthetic diagnostics (e.g. Fast-Ion Loss Detectors, Neutron Cameras) to bridge the gap between our models and future experimental campaignsIdeal Experience & Skillsets:, • PhD in Plasma Physics, Computational Physics, or related field (or Master’s / Bachelor’s with equivalent research experience), • Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in scientific computing (e.g. Python, Fortran, C++, or MATLAB), • Creative problem solving and proven ability to thrive in collaborative environments such as startups or research groups, • Willingness to collaborate with a diverse team of scientists and engineers within the company and externally, • Passion for advancing the field of fusion energy research, • Familiarity with kinetic, MHD or particle-following codes, • Experience developing Machine Learning surrogates for physical systems, • Familiarity with energetic particle diagnosticsCompany Benefits:, • Salary range $135,000-$210,000, • Comprehensive health benefits (e.g. medical/dental/vision), • Employee equity stock options, • 20 days PTOIt’s not necessary to meet all of the skillsets outlined above. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in plasma physics, with a particular emphasis on plasma fluid models, neutral particle models, and/or atomic processes within plasmas. Experience with the boundary of fusion devices is a plus. You will work on a dynamic team, contributing to cutting-edge research and development in Thea Energy’s stellarator systems. Key Responsibilities: • Develop and implement algorithms for the simulation of fluid plasmas within complex magnetic edge topologies., • Conduct simulations and analyses of collisional edge plasma in stellarators, coupled with neutral-particle and atomic physics models., • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to design stellarator divertor systems., • Perform data analysis, model validation, and provide insights into the physical mechanisms governing plasma behavior., • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and publications based on design, optimization, and simulation results., • Stay up to date with the latest advancements in computational plasma physics, fusion energy, and optimization techniques.Required Experience & Skillsets: Qualifications: • PhD in Plasma Physics, Computational Physics, Applied Physics, or a related field, or bachelor’s degree in a relevant field with 5+ years of experience or master’s degree in relevant field with 2+ years of experience., • Strong knowledge of computational plasma physics and numerical simulations., • Experience with the boundary of fusion devices, especially stellarators or tokamaks, is a plus., • Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in scientific computing (e.g. Python, Fortran, C++, and MATLAB)., • Familiarity with simulation tools used in plasma physics research. Preferred Skills: • Experience with edge plasma models such as FLARE, DESC, SOLPS, UEDGE, and EMC3-EIRENE., • Experience working on an integrated plasma physics experimental device, ideally a stellarator or tokamak., • Understanding of plasma fluid models and neutral particle models., • Familiarity with Plasma-Material Interactions., • Experience in high-performance computing (HPC) environments.. You will apply advanced kinetic and fluid models to characterize heat, particle, and momentum transport in highly-optimized stellarator geometries. Your objective is to transform fundamental physics into actionable constraints, guiding our equilibrium+coil optimization and operational scenarios to ensure the success of our next generation fusion devices. Key Responsibilities: • Perform/analyze integrated modeling simulations to predict performance and develop scenarios for Thea Energy’s Eos and Helios stellarators., • Utilize gyrokinetic, fluid, and/or reduced transport solvers to provide projections of confinement, heat, particle, and momentum transport., • Maintain and extend existing gyrokinetic and transport frameworks, • Build reproducible simulation pipelines and data analysis tools to streamline the design-to-validation loop., • Use insights from turbulence and transport analysis to guide equilibrium and coil optimization., • Collaborate with the physics and engineering team to develop scenarios and interpret results from current hardware.Required Experience & Skillsets: Qualifications: • PhD in Plasma Physics, Computational Physics, Applied Mathematics, or a related field. (Candidates with a Master’s degree and 3+ years of direct experience in transport/turbulence modeling will be considered)., • Strong understanding of gyrokinetic theory and transport processes, • Expertise in developing scientific simulation codes using Python, C++, or Fortran., • Proven experience working in Linux-based HPC environments with a focus on code scalability and performance.
