SALARY: $62,500-67,500 depending on experience ORGANIZATIONAL DESCRIPTION:
Immigration Law & Justice New York (ILJNY) is a ministry of hospitality that welcomes immigrants into our communities with compassion, dignity, and love by providing free, high-quality immigration services, engaging in advocacy for immigrants’ rights, and offering education to communities of faith and the public. ILJNY is part of the Immigration Law & Justice Network. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION:
The Staff Attorney will be responsible for the direct representation of vulnerable immigrant clients seeking humanitarian immigration legal services such as but not limited to Asylum, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, and defense in immigration removal proceedings. Services will be provided in the office and at clinic sites by appointment only. Representation may require appearances in person in Long Island, New York, and New Jersey and at USCIS offices and New York City and Newark, NJ Immigration Court. The position will be located in Hicksville, NY, with at least monthly travel to New York City for staff meetings, and the successful applicant will work in coordination with established community partners to promote community education and advocacy of immigrants’ rights. MAJOR DUTIES:
The position is organized around three major areas of work – legal representation; education, awareness, and advocacy; and strategic guidance and supervision. ● Legal Representation - The Staff Attorney will carry her/his own caseload developed through legal clinics and individual appointments and consisting of representation before the Immigration Court, USCIS, and related appeals. Additionally, s/he will supervise legal work carried out by legal advocate, law student interns and volunteer attorneys. Volunteer attorneys, law students, and other volunteers from each clinic site may assist the Staff Attorney with this work, but all work performed by them shall be reviewed by the Managing Attorney and/or the Staff Attorney(s). ● Education, Awareness, and Advocacy - The Staff Attorney may occasionally present Know Your Rights and immigration education talks to immigrant, faith, and other communities. S/he may take part in or present at events to the New York professional legal community. ● Other duties - Interface with Executive Director and Managing Attorney to carry out ILJNY’s mission and goals; advise Executive Director on certain aspects of legal programmatic delivery; assist Executive Director in preparation of periodic reports, grant requirements or grant proposals. QUALIFICATIONS: ● Must have a J.D. and be authorized to practice law in immigration court, New York state court, and in other immigration legal venues. ● Must have at least 3 years of experience in immigration law, which can include prior immigration clinic experience in law school. ● Oral and written Spanish language fluency required. ● Ability to work independently, assess priorities, take initiative, handle multiple assignments, and meet deadlines ● Excellent research and oral and written communications skills, must be comfortable speaking in public ● Strong supervisory skills, including experience supervising legal staff, ● Willingness to travel to New York City Immigration Court and New York City and Long Island Family Courts as required, ● Ability to work sensitively with clients having diverse personalities, lifestyles, cultures, and faiths ● Demonstrated strong commitment to immigrant justice and public interest legal services.
