Job Description Job Title: Phlebotomist II Job Description The Phlebotomist II performs high-quality blood draws and specimen collections in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting, ensuring accurate labeling, handling, and documentation in accordance with established procedures and regulatory standards. This role supports daily laboratory operations by troubleshooting issues, assisting with training, and recommending workflow improvements while providing clear, courteous communication to patients and healthcare staff. Responsibilities • Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in accordance with established procedures., • Collect, handle, and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens following standard protocols to maintain specimen integrity., • Explain venipuncture, blood draw, and other specimen collection procedures to patients in a clear, courteous, and professional manner., • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that patient information and test orders are correct., • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols., • Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy., • Package specimens for transport, ensuring they are placed in appropriate containers or tubes and stored at required temperatures., • Follow detailed procedures for specimen transport to preserve the integrity and stability of the samples., • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures in accordance with laboratory guidelines., • Update patient information accurately in the system and maintain clear, complete documentation of all collections., • Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders to ensure proper tests and collections are performed., • Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory results or information as appropriate to satisfy inquiries., • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and regulatory requirements., • Attend and actively participate in annual department trainings and ongoing competency assessments., • Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, processing, or workflow., • Support training of colleagues by demonstrating proper phlebotomy techniques and best practices., • Make recommendations to improve workflow efficiency and overall quality of laboratory services. Essential Skills • Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required., • Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting., • 2–4 years of overall experience in a related healthcare or laboratory role., • Proven proficiency in performing venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles., • Demonstrated experience in labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and packaging specimens according to test orders., • Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all patient and test information., • Strong attention to detail to ensure 100% accuracy in test requisitions, labels, and documentation., • Working knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and adherence to safety and compliance standards., • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for data entry, record keeping, and communication., • High School Diploma or GED., • Effective verbal communication skills to explain procedures clearly and courteously to patients and staff., • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining quality and accuracy., • Experience in Pediatry Additional Skills & Qualifications • Experience answering telephone calls and communicating laboratory results or information to internal and external stakeholders., • Familiarity with updating patient information and maintaining accurate electronic or paper records., • Experience recording maintenance data and performing decontamination procedures in a laboratory or clinical setting., • Ability to interpret and fully understand physicians’ orders related to laboratory testing., • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple specimens, orders, and priorities simultaneously., • Capability to assist with training colleagues in phlebotomy techniques and workflow processes., • Aptitude for troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, processing, or workflow and recommending improvements., • Customer service mindset with a focus on patient comfort, clarity, and respect during specimen collection. Work Environment This role operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment that requires frequent interaction with patients, clinicians, and laboratory staff. The position involves regular use of phlebotomy equipment such as straight needles, butterfly needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and specimen transport containers, as well as computer systems and Microsoft Office Suite for documentation and communication. Work includes handling blood and other biological specimens, following strict protocols for storage, temperature control, and decontamination to maintain safety and specimen integrity. The environment emphasizes adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations, participation in annual department trainings, and consistent compliance with safety procedures. The role may require standing for extended periods, moving between collection areas, and managing multiple collections and tasks throughout the day, while maintaining a professional appearance appropriate for a clinical setting. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Warren, NJ. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $21.00/hr.
