JOB TITLE: Medical Assistant REPORTS TO: Nurse manager, Practice Manager The following statements reflect the general duties, responsibilities and competencies considered necessary to perform the essential functions of the job and should not be considered as a detailed description of all the work requirements of this position. About the Role: The Medical Assistant plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of healthcare facilities by providing essential support to medical professionals and enhancing patient care. This position involves a combination of clinical and administrative tasks that contribute to the overall efficiency of the healthcare team. The Medical Assistant will be responsible for preparing patients for examinations, assisting with procedures, and managing medical records. By effectively communicating with patients and healthcare providers, the Medical Assistant helps to create a welcoming and organized environment. Ultimately, this role is vital in promoting patient satisfaction and ensuring high-quality healthcare delivery. Minimum Qualifications: • High school diploma or equivalent., • Completion of a medical assistant training program or equivalent experience., • High School Diploma or equivalent required, • Medical Assistant Certification required, • Basic CPR (BCLS) Certification, • Two years’ experience working in the health care field, • Capacity for covering Medical Assistants at all sites as needed, • Bilingual in English and Spanish/Creole required., • Experience in a clinical setting, particularly in a medical office or hospital., • Certification as a Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA)., • Prepare patients for examinations by taking vital signs, medical histories, and assisting with physical exams., • Perform phlebotomy and specimen processing, ensuring proper sterilization and handling of medical instruments., • Assist healthcare providers during examinations and procedures, providing necessary support and ensuring patient comfort., • Manage administrative tasks such as answering phones, scheduling appointments, and maintaining accurate patient records., • Collaborate with the healthcare team to ensure seamless patient care and follow-up on treatment plans., • Promptly greets, assists, and directs patients and visitors in a pleasant and professional manner., • Responsible for patient check-in, registration, and check-out., • Instructs patient/guardian of documentation required for visit. On subsequent visits, verifies demographic and billing information to ensure accuracy., • Obtains patient demographic and insurance information, verifies insurance eligibility, and enters accurate information in the electronic health record., • Provides patients with an explanation of all registration forms, obtain patient/guardian signatures on required consents and acknowledgements, and scan all accurately completed registration forms in the electronic health record., • Navigates through insurance portals and accurately interprets coverage information such as the plan coverage description, copayment, primary care provider, etc./, • Schedules patients’ appointments in accordance with criteria established by the health center., • Performs appointment reminder calls and no-show calls., • Performs other clerical duties such as filling, photocopying, and scanning of medical records., • Assists with the preparation of patients prior to seeing practitioners., • Assists the practitioners with patient care in the conduct of clinical examinations and materials preparation, i.e., dressing changes, Pap Smear, etc., • Acts as a translator for patients as needed, • Responsible for taking vital signs, administering tuberculin tests, and performing procedures for specimen collection, routine eye screening, hearing tests, hematocrit, urinalysis, and urine culture, • Performs EKG and simple laboratory procedures, • Distributes lab reports to practitioners for review, • Provides patient counseling regarding procedures (Ex. lab tests), • Assist in the maintenance of inventories and stocking of supplies in examination rooms, nursing, and lab areas, • Maintains logs of required data as needed, • Communicates and coordinates with clinical and school staff to ensure timely patient care., • Acts as the patient’s advocate and liaison for preservation of patient's rights, • Participates in off-site screening projects as needed, • Participates in departmental QA and other patient related committees as needed, • Participates in outreach and community screenings as needed, • Participates in case management and patient surveys in maintaining quality assurance The required skills of medical assisting, phlebotomy, and vital signs monitoring are essential for daily patient interactions and clinical procedures. Proficiency in using medical instruments ensures that the Medical Assistant can assist healthcare providers effectively during examinations and treatments. Strong communication skills are vital for answering phones and scheduling appointments, as they help create a positive experience for patients. Attention to detail is crucial when processing specimens and maintaining accurate medical records, as it directly impacts patient care. Additionally, the ability to work collaboratively with a healthcare team enhances the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the medical practice.
