Mission The Optomechanical Engineer will be responsible for the design, analysis, and integration of precision optomechanical subsystems for free-space optical communication (FSOC) platforms. The role is central to ensuring mechanical robustness, optical stability, and environmental reliability across the full product lifecycle, from concept and detailed design through integration, validation, and manufacturing support. Responsibilities Optomechanical Design and Development Design and develop precision optomechanical components and assemblies, including optical mounts, structural housings, alignment features, and mechanical interfaces for free-space optical systems. Define mechanical architectures that preserve optical alignment and stability under thermal, vibrational, and environmental constraints. Contribute to the mechanical design of Pointing, Acquisition, and Tracking (PAT) subsystems, including actuator mounts, steering mechanisms, and optical sensor interfaces. Analysis and Performance Validation Perform tolerance analyses and alignment sensitivity studies to ensure optical performance is maintained across mechanical and environmental variations. Conduct structural and thermal analyses to evaluate deformation, vibration response, and thermal stability affecting optical paths. Apply FEA tools and analytical methods to validate design robustness prior to prototyping and manufacturing. Integration, Testing, and Industrialization Support Support the integration, alignment, and testing of optomechanical hardware in laboratory environments, participating in optical alignment, metrology, and performance verification activities. Collaborate in root cause analysis and debugging activities related to mechanical–optical interactions. Generate and maintain detailed mechanical drawings, CAD models, and technical documentation to support manufacturing, assembly, and configuration control. Cross-Functional Collaboration Work closely with optical, electrical, embedded software, and systems engineers to ensure seamless subsystem integration. Contribute to design reviews, risk assessments, and technical decision-making processes. Support continuous improvement initiatives related to design methodologies, materials selection, and assembly processes. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optomechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline. 2–4 years of professional experience in optomechanical or precision mechanical engineering roles. Demonstrated experience designing precision mechanical components for alignment-critical optical systems. Proficiency in 3D CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, Creo, NX) and production-ready drawing standards. Practical experience with tolerance analysis, optomechanical alignment principles, and material selection for thermal and mechanical stability. Working knowledge of structural and thermal analysis methods; hands-on experience with FEA tools is required. Experience supporting hardware build, integration, and laboratory testing activities. Strong collaboration skills, analytical mindset, and high attention to detail within multidisciplinary engineering environments. Preferred Experience Experience in free-space optical communication systems or related photonics-based platforms. Exposure to precision actuation, beam steering, or tracking mechanisms.
