Job Description
We are looking for a support worker / carer to join the nice and very professional lovely team around a young friendly disabled man who lives at home with his family and dog.
The young man has very complex health needs and is non verbal.
Ideally you can take on 2 waking nights and 2 day shifts (minimum of 37.5 hours or more per week). This is a full time position.
We would ideally hope to find someone who is flexible to occasionally take on extra shifts.
The existing team is fair with each other to also cover equal time covering some weekends and holidays like Christmas and of course cover for each other during their colleagues holidays and if one of the team is ill.
The perfect candidate for this position would be someone who has a strong interest in working with a very friendly disabled young man. Is openminded and does not mind to learn.
This position could suit student of a related subject like nursing, psychology, physiotherapy, social work etc.
The waking night shifts are to keep him safe and take care of all health needs and alert the parents in case of a seizure or if there is any other emergency.
Each waking night shift is 13 hours long. 20.00 -09.00.
We feel consecutive nights work best. We need to cover either Thursday & Friday or Sunday & Monday or Tuesday & Wednesday.
Let us know in your application which nights work best for you and if you are interested in only covering 2 regular nights (26 hours per week) next to studies or if you are interested in the full time position (2 regular waking nights plus 2 day shifts).
Day shifts are mostly 8 hours long (sometimes a bit longer). Day shifts start either at 8.30 or at 13.30 for the afternoon shift.
The candidate needs to be physically really fit & strong with good balance and not too petite as the young person needs a lot of support as he has a movement disorder, severe epilepsy, profound autism, is non verbal and has other health needs additionally but likes to walk (and this with a lot of support).
Training through shadowing will be provided.
Most training in the first few weeks will be solely during daytime until confident enough to take on night shadowing.
We would like to find someone who can accept this position as their only job. This position is very different from care home jobs as it is in his home with his family.
About the young person
He is a very friendly and active profoundly autistic young man / teenager who is non verbal. He is very friendly and not aggressive.
He can walk short distances but only with a lot of support, otherwise he is in a wheelchair.
His communication is mainly through pointing and pictures of reference and he is taught life skills with ABA principles.
We will train you in behaviour therapy (ABA) and would expect you to follow our training.
There are regular team meetings and you would attend those meetings too.
He sometimes is also tired and unwell after a seizure or other illness and will then just need care and nurturing and patience.
Sometimes he has to be in hospital and a member of his team would be there with him - so waking nights could also be at hospital.
As he has a movement disorder he needs a lot of physical support.
He lives with his family and also a dog.
During the night you would have to be awake and vigilant and alert the family in case of a seizure. The nights are strictly waking and can easily turn into quite active nights when there is a health problem and the young man often needs to go to hospital then. For the correct candidate this is a good opportunity to learn.
During the day his team needs to follow a clear health regime and also make sure he lives a fulfilled life - being in the community - cafes, pub lunches, visiting shops, going to the park, riding a disability bike and going to splash in the pool.
The team also accompany him on holidays with his family.
