PURPOSE OF POSITION
To share in the Holistic Health Care needs for people in their own home by meeting the personal care needs of service users in ways that respect the dignity of the individual and promotes independence. Care provided by care assistants is expected to include care that would reasonably be given by members of the service user’s own family but in a formal and professional way and is not expected to include tasks that would normally be expected to be undertaken by a trained nurse.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
To assist and maintain the personal hygiene of the people you visit by carrying out the following activities.
• Help with washing or bathing
• Help with care of teeth and dentures
• Help with care of hair including washing, combing/brushing and simple styling (such as putting long hair into a ponytail or simple plait)
• Help with care of facial hair including shaving and trimming • Help with dressing or undressing and changing of clothes
• Reporting any observations or changes related to the above

To assist with the elimination needs of the people you visit by carrying out the following activities:
• Assisting with mobility to enable the person to get to the toilet.
• Assisting with bedpans and urinal bottles if the person is unable to walk to the toilet
• Assisting with minor medical tasks as requested when trained by the appropriate professional such as district nurses.
• Reporting any observations or changes related to the above

To assist with the nutritional needs of the people you visit by carrying out the following activities
• Preparing meals, or helping people to do so for themselves
• Preparing drinks, and leaving drinks for the client in between visits
• Assisting with feeding and drinking if required
• Tidying around and washing up after meal preparation
• Recording the intake of food and drink in the care notes
• Providing shopping services if required
• Complying with dietary requirements
• Reporting any observations or changes related to the above


To assist with the mobility of the people you visit by carrying out the following activities:
• Using the correct procedures to safely assist with transfers and mobility, including assisting with sitting and standing, changing position in bed, turning, and walking using suitable aids and equipment if required
• Promoting safe techniques for mobility and transfers
• Following the correct procedures to ensure skin integrity and prevent pressure sores
• Reporting any observations or changes related to the above, including concerns about safety and skin integrity

To promote a safe, therapeutic environment by carrying out the following activities:
• Ensuring that living areas are tidy and free of hazards
• Providing care as directed
• Use of equipment and appliances as directed
• Following the company’s policies and procedures at work
• Providing housework and laundry services if required
• Reporting all incidents and accidents and any other matters concerning

To assist in maintaining clear communication by carrying out the following activities:
• Keeping accurate and detailed records of tasks undertaken as recommended in the individuals care plan.
• Ensuring confidentiality is always maintained at all time

To promote social and physical independence by:
• Participating with social activities with the people you visit
• Encouraging and supporting with rehabilitation exercises and tasks as directed by a physiotherapist, occupational therapist or reablement worker
• Reporting any observations or changes related to the above

To assist with the health and wellbeing needs of the people you visit by:
• Carefully following instructions for the support and administration of medication
• Keeping accurate records of support given with medication
• Assist with the putting on and removal of support stockings
• Other medical tasks as requested when trained by the appropriate medical professional • Reporting any observations or changes related to the above

To ensure the safeguarding and security of the people you visit by:
• Reporting any concerns, even if they seem trivial, to the office or appropriate manager
• Following all relevant policies and procedures and record keeping requirements
• Following the whistleblowing procedures and reporting any bad practice you observe
• Reporting any mistakes or omissions to the office as soon as you are aware of them
• Keeping the office advised in a timely manner of any delays or difficulties you have in making your visits
