Research Scientist – Environmental Sensors & Data Systems 📍 Southampton, Hampshire (Hybrid – 3 days onsite) 💰 £40,000 per annum About the Company Our client is a fast-growing technology business developing innovative environmental sensor and data systems that help utilities and governments monitor and improve water quality. Their solutions span hardware, software, and data analytics, enabling real-time insights that support cleaner, safer, and more sustainable water systems. They’re known for turning cutting-edge research into real-world impact, combining science, engineering, and data intelligence to help solve critical infrastructure challenges. The Role As a Research Scientist, you’ll join a multidisciplinary R&D team working on the next generation of sensor and monitoring technology. This is a hands-on, collaborative role involving experiment design, data analysis, sensor testing, and applied research across chemistry, physics, and data science. You’ll work closely with engineering, manufacturing, and data teams to validate new concepts, improve existing systems, and help shape new commercial products for global customers. Key Responsibilities • Design and execute laboratory and field experiments to evaluate sensor performance., • Analyse experimental and field data (small-scale and large datasets)., • Contribute to product development through applied research and quantitative analysis., • Perform statistical and coding-based analysis (Python, R, SQL)., • Support calibration model training and validation for sensor systems., • Collaborate across disciplines to develop and deploy new sensing and data technologies., • Document research findings and present results to technical and non-technical audiences. About You You’ll thrive in a collaborative R&D environment, enjoy problem-solving, and have a strong understanding of experimental design and data interpretation. Essential Skills & Experience • Strong foundation in experimental design and scientific method., • Analytical mindset with ability to perform data/statistical analysis., • Basic coding skills (Python, R, or SQL)., • Excellent written and verbal communication skills., • High attention to detail and quality of data., • Must possess full right to work in the UK, we cannot consider those on a work or temporary visa of any kind. Qualifications • MSc or PhD in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline (e.g. Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science, Engineering)., • Alternatively, strong applied research or instrumentation experience. Desirable • Exposure to sensor development or IoT monitoring systems., • Experience in environmental or water-quality research., • Familiarity with signal processing, electrochemistry, or fluid dynamics., • Previous industry or lab-based R&D experience.
