Job DescriptionPosition Purpose. Responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of the Company’s transportation plan and supporting the coordination and management of transportation activities including but not limited to: safety, crew personnel, scheduling, costs, efficient movements of railcars, serving the needs of customers, and overall railroad operations. Supports the development and implementation of procedures that ensure the safe and effective operation and completion of the transportation function. Coordinates closely with other railroads and related departments to maintain schedules and effect necessary changes and revisions.Required Education, Knowledge & Experience: • A 4-year degree in business or related field is preferred; a High School diploma or equivalent is required., • Thorough understanding of operating and safety rules., • Knowledge of collective bargaining contracts., • Familiarity with effective utilization of crew and equipment., • Prior railroad and management experience, including operating and safety rules is preferred., • Assists Senior Management in developing short and long term goals and objectives., • Participates in developing department policies and procedures that support Company-wide strategic objectives., • Manages rail service to all customers consistent with their needs by developing crew and train schedules that provide accurate and timely delivery/pickup of railcars and efficient use of equipment and crews., • Ensures daily train lists are accurate and that train crews efficiently perform work within their territory., • Ensures all reporting is performed in an accurate and timely manner, including digital entry of car movements, daily crew work sheets, and weekly operational reporting., • Manages cars online. Understands and effectively manages car hire and demurrage., • Communicates switch orders to conductors via verbal, written, and/or electronic means., • Provides leadership through effective goal setting, delegation, and communication., • Performs assessments, operational testing, job safety briefings, and safety meetings to support a strong safety culture that consistently reduces hazard exposure and safety incidents., • Monitors, trains, advises, and coaches employees on the safe and efficient performance of their duties. Guides employees on techniques, habits and behavior to enhanced safety, performance and productivity., • Directs and assigns personnel. Provides assistance and support as needed., • Assists with personnel decisions that may include hiring, terminations, wages, and promotions., • Evaluates and provides disposition on all man-hours under his/her area of responsibility. Forwards man-hours to the payroll department in a timely basis. Assigns bids and awards vacancies.
