Job DescriptionJob Title: Phlebotomist II – Patient Station Job Description This role performs advanced phlebotomy duties in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting, supporting high-quality specimen collection, handling, and processing. The Phlebotomist II assists with troubleshooting, training, and workflow improvement while delivering courteous and clear communication to patients and healthcare staff. Responsibilities • Perform blood draws using venipuncture techniques, including straight needles and butterfly needles, in a safe and efficient manner., • Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, according to established procedures and protocols., • Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients to ensure understanding and comfort., • Match laboratory requisition forms with specimen tubes to ensure accurate identification and prevent errors., • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders, maintaining specimen integrity., • Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy., • Package specimens for transport according to protocol, including proper temperature control and container selection., • Store specimen samples at required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling., • Follow different procedures as outlined by specific protocols to maintain the integrity of specimens during handling and transport., • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory standards., • Update patient information accurately in the system and maintain detailed documentation of all collections and procedures., • Demonstrate proper phlebotomy techniques to others, supporting training and skills development as needed., • Fully understand and interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct tests and procedures are performed., • Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, labeling, and workflow, and make recommendations for process improvements., • Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory results or information as appropriate to satisfy inquiries, maintaining professionalism and confidentiality., • Attend annual department trainings and remain current with policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements., • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and compliance standards., • Provide courteous, patient-focused service and maintain a professional demeanor in all interactions.Essential Skills, • Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required., • Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting., • High school diploma or GED with 2–4 years of overall work experience., • Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy, including blood draws and venipuncture., • Experience with specimen collection, labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and storage according to protocol., • Ability to read, understand, and accurately follow physicians’ orders and laboratory requisitions., • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks., • Strong customer service skills with the ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients and staff., • Knowledge of and adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations and safety procedures., • MUST have pediatric drawing experience., • MUST have geriatric drawing experience.Additional Skills & Qualifications, • Experience working in a high-volume, fast-paced clinical or hospital environment., • Comfort working with a wide range of patient populations, including children and older adults., • Ability to troubleshoot issues related to specimen collection and workflow and recommend improvements., • Willingness to participate in ongoing training and annual departmental education., • Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate labeling, documentation, and handling of specimens.Work Environment This position operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting with a focus on accurate and timely specimen collection and processing. The role involves regular use of phlebotomy equipment such as straight and butterfly needles, centrifuges, and specimen storage systems, as well as computer systems and Microsoft Office Suite for documentation and communication. The schedule runs Monday through Friday from 7:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., requiring consistent evening and overnight availability. The environment emphasizes strict adherence to safety, OSHA, and DEP regulations, with routine decontamination and maintenance tasks integrated into daily work. Team members collaborate closely with clinical staff, support patient-facing interactions, and maintain a professional appearance appropriate for a clinical setting. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Somerset, NJ. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.50/hr.
