Job DescriptionJob Title: Diesel Mechanic Job Description This role is responsible for performing repair, maintenance, and inspection work on a fleet of approximately 35 trucks, primarily Kenworth and Peterbilt models. You will work on a variety of vehicles including tractors and trailers, box trucks, and dual trucks, focusing on preventative and corrective maintenance, minor engine work, and troubleshooting of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems. Responsibilities • Perform routine and preventative maintenance on a fleet of approximately 35 trucks, including tractors and trailers, box trucks, and dual trucks., • Complete oil changes and standard service procedures in a timely and accurate manner., • Carry out minor motor and engine work, excluding major engine repairs, which are handled at a separate shop., • Inspect, diagnose, and repair air brake systems to ensure safe and reliable operation., • Inspect, diagnose, and repair hydraulic brake systems., • Perform suspension inspections, adjustments, and repairs as needed., • Troubleshoot and repair electrical wiring and related electrical components on diesel trucks., • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections on trucks that are driven on the road, documenting findings clearly., • Use diagnostic and mechanical troubleshooting skills to identify and resolve issues with diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, hydraulics, pneumatics, and other truck systems., • Perform tire changes and related wheel service when needed, if qualified and experienced., • Respond to and perform service calls on fleet vehicles that have broken down or have been taken out of service., • Operate both manual and automatic transmission trucks safely and proficiently for testing, inspection, or repositioning., • Use basic computer skills to document work performed, maintain maintenance records, and access technical information., • Communicate effectively in verbal and written form with co-workers and customers, maintaining a professional business relationship., • Lift and handle parts, tools, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds in the course of daily work., • Follow all safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area., • Utilize personal tools and equipment to perform daily maintenance and repair tasks.Essential Skills, • Hands-on experience with diesel repair and diesel maintenance on commercial trucks., • Ability to perform oil changes and routine preventative maintenance on a variety of diesel trucks., • Working knowledge of air brake systems, including inspection, diagnosis, and repair., • Working knowledge of hydraulic brake systems, including inspection, diagnosis, and repair., • Ability to perform minor motor and engine work on diesel engines, excluding major engine overhauls., • Experience with suspension inspection, troubleshooting, and repair., • Electrical wiring knowledge and experience troubleshooting and repairing electrical systems on trucks., • Experience with troubleshooting and repairing diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, hydraulics, pneumatics, and related components., • Strong troubleshooting skills for mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues., • Ability to perform accurate pre-trip and post-trip inspections on trucks., • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds safely and repeatedly as required by the job., • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with co-workers and customers., • Willingness to perform service calls on fleet vehicles that have broken down or have been taken out of service., • Ownership of a set of personal tools suitable for diesel truck maintenance and repair., • Ability to work primarily on a 2nd shift schedule.Additional Skills & Qualifications, • Welding experience for basic repair and fabrication tasks., • Experience using a torch for cutting and related work., • Fabrication skills for brackets, mounts, or minor structural components., • Tire changing capability and experience with truck tires and wheels., • Class B CDL license, enabling operation of commercial vehicles as needed., • Computer skills for documenting work orders, maintenance records, and accessing technical information., • Proficiency in driving both manual and automatic transmission trucks for testing and positioning., • Experience working with fleets and understanding fleet maintenance practices., • Familiarity with preventive and corrective maintenance programs for diesel engines and trucks.Why Work Here? Work may require standing, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds, as well as occasional outdoor exposure when handling breakdowns or vehicles taken out of service. The environment is focused on safety, organization, and efficient repair and maintenance of a diverse fleet of diesel trucks. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Elizabeth, NJ. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $34.00/hr.
