Learn more at: Position Overview: Avery Hall is seeking a Senior Design Manager to join our growing team. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Development, Director of Construction, and senior leadership, this individual will be involved in all facets of day-to-day design, coordination and construction administration activities across multiple mixed-use and multifamily projects. This role is highly collaborative and hands-on, engaging with in-house development & construction teams, consultants, contractors, and ownership throughout all phases of development. The position offers a unique opportunity to participate in every stage of the development lifecycle—from concept through design coordination and construction execution —within a high-energy, fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment. This position is based in Brooklyn, New York, and requires regular on-site presence at active construction sites as well as in-office presence at Avery Hall’s corporate headquarters in Gowanus, Brooklyn. Key Responsibilities: Design Leadership & Project Oversight • Lead the architectural and interior design process across multiple mixed-use, multifamily, and condominium projects from concept design through construction administration., • Maintain the overall design vision, ensuring alignment with Avery Hall’s standards for design excellence, market positioning, functionality, and long-term asset value., • Direct the preparation and review of concept design, schematic design, design development, and consultant packages to ensure clarity, quality, and execution readiness., • Prepare and oversee high-quality presentations, renderings, finish boards, and visual storytelling materials for internal leadership, capital partners, and external stakeholders., • Coordinate with architects, interior designers, landscape architects, lighting designers, and specialty consultants throughout all design phases., • Manage interdisciplinary coordination across structural, MEP, façade, vertical transportation, and specialty trades to proactively resolve conflicts and maintain schedule milestones., • Review the selection and specification of architectural materials, interior finishes, FF&E, lighting, and specialty elements across all project typologies., • Source vendors and coordinate material pricing exercises to balance design intent, durability, and budget parameters., • Collaborate with development and construction teams to evaluate subcontractor bids, scope leveling, alternates, and procurement packages for design alignment., • Oversee design intent through construction by review of RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, mock-ups, field sketches, and finish samples., • Conduct regular site walks to verify design execution, field quality, finish consistency, and resolution of in-field design conditions., • Collaborate with construction and development leadership to resolve field conflicts, sequencing issues, and material substitutions while protecting the overall design vision., • Lead architectural and interior design analysis for new acquisitions, including massing studies, unit mix test fits, façade concepts and amenity strategies., • Provide early-stage design feasibility studies, competitive market analysis, and conceptual strategies for potential investments. Qualifications: Education • Bachelor’s degree required (Architecture, Construction Management, Engineering, or design-related field preferred)., • Master’s degree in Architecture, Construction Management, Real Estate Development, or Engineering is strongly preferred. Professional Experience • 10+ years of relevant experience in architecture, real estate development, construction, or related design/development fields., • Extensive knowledge of building systems, construction materials & detailing, means and methods for multifamily and mixed-use development., • Demonstrated ability to manage design development, coordinate consultants, and resolve technical issues., • Experience with the NYC entitlement, zoning, approvals, and permitting processes. Skills & Attributes • Proven leadership with a collaborative, solutions-oriented mindset., • Exceptional organizational, written, and verbal communication skills., • Ability to work independently while fostering teamwork across large consultant and construction teams., • Construction administration, detailing and shop drawing review/coordination., • High proficiency in Bluebeam, Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Adobe Suite & 3D Modeling Software. Salary: Salary will be determined on an individualized basis taking into account a wide range of factors including, but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, education, and, where applicable, licenses or certifications held.
