Job Description Landscape Laborer – Job Description Position Summary The Landscape Laborer plays a vital role in maintaining and enhancing outdoor environments by performing a wide range of physical tasks that support landscaping, ground maintenance, and installation projects. This position is responsible for site preparation, planting, mulching, trimming, and assisting with the installation of landscape features to create aesthetically pleasing, functional, and sustainable outdoor spaces. Landscape Laborers work closely with supervisors, crew leaders, and team members to execute landscape design plans, maintain plant health, and ensure that project timelines and quality standards are met. The position requires attention to detail, reliability, and adherence to safety procedures when operating tools, machinery, and working around the general public. This role contributes directly to creating safe, attractive, and environmentally responsible outdoor spaces that meet client expectations and community standards. Physical Demands This position requires substantial physical activity and outdoor work in varying environmental conditions. Employees must be able to: • Lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50–75 pounds regularly, • Perform repetitive bending, kneeling, squatting, and twisting, • Stand, walk, or work on uneven terrain for extended periods (8+ hours), • Use hand tools and power equipment requiring grip strength and manual dexterity, • Work outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, humidity, and dust, • Operate equipment that produces vibration, noise, and airborne debris, • Maintain balance while working on slopes, ladders, or uneven ground, • Perform overhead work such as trimming branches or installing materials Employees must be able to wear, and use required personal protective equipment (PPE) including gloves, safety glasses, boots, and high-visibility safety apparel. Minimum Qualifications • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks including lifting, bending, digging, and standing for extended periods • Basic knowledge of landscaping tools and equipment, • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to job sites within the United States, • Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, • Strong work ethic and ability to follow instructions and safety procedures, • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment Preferred Qualifications • Previous experience in landscaping, grounds maintenance, or outdoor construction, • Familiarity with plant identification and horticultural practices, • Certification in pesticide application or landscaping safety, • Experience operating landscaping machinery such as mowers, trimmers, and small tractors, • Basic understanding of landscape installation and design principles, • OSHA safety training or equivalent safety certification Responsibilities • Assist with the installation and maintenance of landscaping elements including plants, trees, shrubs, turf, irrigation components, and landscape materials • Prepare work sites by removing debris, grading soil, digging holes, and setting up necessary equipment • Plant trees, shrubs, flowers, and sod according to landscape design specifications, • Apply mulch, fertilizer, soil amendments, herbicides, and pesticides following safety guidelines and environmental regulations • Safely operate hand tools, electric equipment, and landscaping machinery, • Perform trimming, pruning, and general grounds maintenance, • Load, transport, and unload landscaping materials such as soil, mulch, stone, plants, and tools, • Maintain tools and equipment in safe working conditions and report maintenance needs or safety hazards • Assist with site cleanup and ensure work areas remain organized and safe, • Follow all company safety policies, OSHA standards, and operational procedures Skills The required skills enable the Landscape Laborer to effectively perform manual labor tasks such as planting, mulching, trimming, and site preparation while maintaining safety and efficiency. Knowledge of landscaping tools and equipment allows employees to operate machinery correctly, reducing the risk of injury and equipment damage. Skills in plant care and horticultural practices support the long-term health and sustainability of landscapes. Communication and teamwork skills are essential for coordinating with crew members and supervisors to complete projects according to specifications and timelines. Problem-solving abilities help laborers adapt to changing site conditions, environmental factors, and project challenges. Attention to detail ensures landscaping work meets aesthetic standards, environmental guidelines, and client expectations. Tools, Equipment, and Machinery Used Landscape Laborers are expected to safely operate and maintain a variety of manual, gas-powered, battery-powered, and electric landscaping tools, including but not limited to: Hand Tools • Pruning shears, • Loppers, • Hedge shears, • Shovels and spades, • Rakes and landscape rakes, • Hoes, • Hand saws, • Post-hole diggers, • Trowels, • Mattocks and Pickaxes, • Wheelbarrows Power and Electric Tools • String trimmers / weed eaters, • Electric or gas hedge trimmers, • Electric tree cutting tools and pole saws, • Chainsaws, • Leaf blowers, • Edgers, • Augers, • Power pruners Landscaping Machinery • Riding mowers, • Zero-turn mowers, • Walk-behind mowers, • Aerators, • Dethatchers, • Sod cutters, • Small tractors, • Compact loaders or skid steers (when trained), • Utility carts or work vehicles Employees must follow manufacturer guidelines, company procedures, and safety protocols when operating any equipment. Professional Conduct and Code of Ethics (Public Work Sites) Landscape Laborers frequently work in areas where clients, residents, pedestrians, and the public are present. Employees must always maintain professional conduct. Employees are expected to: • Treat clients, coworkers, and the public with respect and professionalism, • Maintain appropriate language and behavior on job sites, • Avoid confrontations or disruptive conduct, • Respect private property, public spaces, and community regulations, • Ensure equipment, tools, and materials do not create hazards for pedestrians or traffic, • Use proper safety barriers, cones, or signage when required, • Refrain from smoking, alcohol use, or substance use while on duty, • Maintain a professional appearance and follow company uniform guidelines when applicable, • Immediately report safety concerns, incidents, or public hazards to supervisors Maintaining ethical conduct ensures the safety of workers and the public while preserving the company’s professional reputation
