Job Description The Affordable Housing Controller will oversee all accounting, financial reporting, and compliance functions for a portfolio of affordable housing developments. This individual will lead a team responsible for property-level and consolidated reporting, audits, and regulatory compliance, ensuring adherence to HUD, HPD, HDC, LIHTC, and other funding requirements. This position reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and plays a key role in maintaining financial integrity, supporting development projects, and optimizing accounting systems and processes. Key Responsibilities Financial Management & Reporting • Oversee preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for all housing entities., • Manage general ledger maintenance, journal entries, and reconciliations., • Ensure timely completion of audits, tax filings, and compliance reporting (HUD, HPD, HDC, LIHTC, etc.)., • Consolidate financials across multiple entities and manage intercompany eliminations., • Monitor adherence to GAAP, LIHTC regulations, and all funding agency requirements., • Coordinate with external auditors, lenders, and government agencies on financial reporting and compliance matters., • Supervise and mentor accounting staff (Property Accountants, AP/AR specialists)., • Provide leadership in process improvement, system implementation, and professional development., • Oversee annual budgeting and periodic reforecasting for the organization and properties., • Analyze financial trends and provide insights for management decision-making. Qualifications Required: • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field., • Minimum 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in affordable housing, real estate, or nonprofit management., • Strong understanding of GAAP, LIHTC, HUD, HPD, and HDC reporting requirements., • Experience managing audits and financial reporting for multi-entity organizations., • Proficiency in Yardi and MDS property management/accounting software., • Advanced Excel skills., • CPA designation (or progress toward CPA)., • Experience with housing development accounting or nonprofit fund accounting., • Familiarity with government grants, regulatory agreements, and capital project funding.
