Job Description Summary of Position The race, culture and breaking news reporter is a new position that will play a big role in our fast-paced newsroom. The role requires a reporter who can cover the region’s growing South Asian communities with nuance and sophistication. People from South Asian countries are reshaping Long Island’s political, business and cultural landscape, and we need a reporter who can be at the center of it. This reporter will also cover general assignment stories and breaking news by cultivating diverse sources, using data, and quickly and accurately giving readers information they need in the moment. The role calls for handling breaking news on tight deadlines, while also producing daily and weekly enterprise. The successful candidate will be a superb writer and clear-eyed thinker who drives sustained, thematic coverage. Essential Duties & Functions • Become embedded in the South Asian community on Long Island. Find enterprise stories, identifying emerging trends early, interpreting their significance and producing coverage with urgency, sophistication and impact., • Deliver scoops, pitch ambitious story ideas and execute across all platforms., • Cover breaking news stories with accuracy, speed and determination., • Use social media responsibly to find sources to supplement our reporting., • Collaborate with our teams, including Newsday TV, to tell stories on all platforms: digital, social media, broadcast, print and beyond. Comfort on camera and the ability to explain complex reporting in an authoritative, engaging way are important., • Search public records, analyze data and use it to enrich storytelling and to break news. Essential Job Knowledge & Skills • Experience covering breaking news on deadline., • Experience working with data to develop stories and break news., • Demonstrated ability to meet tight deadlines, juggle more than one story at a time, cultivate sources and produce high-impact enterprise stories., • Willingness to spend time in the field, away from the desk, getting to know communities and finding stories., • Be a strong, confident writer with sharp news judgment who cares deeply about fairness., • Comfort and proficiency using social media, smartphone photo and video and other media platforms responsibly to report and tell stories., • Attention to detail., • Ability and willingness to collaborate and build rapport with others., • Ability to find fresh story angles and write concise, lively copy in keeping with Newsday’s tone and format., • Proficiency in shooting smartphone photos and videos is a necessary skill., • Ability to work a flexible and varied schedule to include weekends, holidays and extended hours as needed to support business needs. Physical requirements This position is hybrid with a three-day-per-week, in-office requirement. Compensation The hourly base range for this role is $36.18 - $54.44, commensurate with experience.
