The backbone of our automation initiative is Flowable , a Java-based open-source workflow engine executing BPMN 2.0 business processes . In this role, your primary focus will be implementing the business logic that integrates backend systems with Flowable applications, ensuring seamless workflow automation across our operations. As a Senior Java Backend Engineer – Workflow Automation , you will be part of the Business Process Automation (BPA) team – a trusted partner for innovative and challenging automation needs. Our international team operates across Spain, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, and Singapore. This role offers the opportunity to design, build, and operate backend systems and workflow solutions that support and optimize our international banking operations, both internally and in collaboration with clients and partners. In this ambitious role, your responsibilities will include: Backend Development & Integration Design, develop, and maintain backend applications using Java and Spring Boot . Implement business logic to integrate backend systems with Flowable workflows . Build, extend, and consume REST APIs for system integration with internal and external platforms. Ensure backend services are scalable, maintainable, and high-performing. Collaborate on architecture and solution design decisions to deliver high-quality systems. Agile Delivery & Collaboration Work in agile environments (Scrum, Kanban), collaborating with business analysts, developers, and process designers. Contribute to DevOps pipelines, automated testing, and continuous delivery practices. Mentor junior developers and share knowledge across the team. Workflow & Automation (Plus Skills) Exposure to workflow automation and BPM platforms (e.g., Flowable, Camunda) is a strong plus. Understanding of BPMN 2.0 / CMMN and process design is desirable. Your Profile To be successful in this role, you should have: Education & Experience Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field. 5+ years of professional experience in Java backend development , with strong expertise in Spring Boot . Hands-on experience with system integration and REST API design and consumption . Experience working in agile delivery teams . Technical Skills Strong Java backend development skills with Spring Boot . Proven experience with REST APIs and integration with multiple systems. Familiarity with relational databases (SQL, Oracle, or similar). Knowledge of DevOps practices and tools (CI/CD pipelines, GitLab, OpenShift, etc.). Nice-to-Have Experience with workflow automation or BPM platforms (Flowable, Camunda). German language skills. Exposure to financial services or banking systems. Test automation and workflow testing experience. Soft Skills & Mindset Strong problem-solving skills and proactive communication. Team-oriented, collaborative, and willing to mentor others. Sense of ownership, professionalism, and pride in high-quality implementations.
