Job Description SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Local Conservation Corps (LCC) corpsmembers engaged in public lands conservation, maintenance and trail project work. SUMMARY Under the supervision of the Nature Based Solutions (NBS) Public Lands Manager, the NBS Public Lands Coordinator assists in implementing NBS projects for the LCC. Works closely with the Public Lands Agency staff project leader(s) during conservation and trail projects on public lands. Follows the direction of the NBS Public Lands Manager to ensure supervisors and corpsmembers can implement all aspects of public lands projects. Ensures supervisors and corpsmembers comply with all safety, LCC and Public Lands Agency rules and requirements at all times. Assist in the fulfillment of the Agency’s vision, “A strong Fresno County where people have resources to shape their future free from poverty.” DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Leads and supervises a wide variety of unskilled young adults, reflective of the communities we serve, with multiple barriers to employment. Assists the NBS Public Lands Manager in reviewing and submitting all timesheets for Public Lands Supervisors and corpsmembers. Provides responsible supervision during public lands conservation, maintenance and trail project work and camping activities, when applicable. Works in cooperation with Public Land Agency partners. Coordinates and conducts vocational, safety, and equipment training for corpsmembers in the areas of trail construction and maintenance, landscaping, natural lands and habitat restoration i.e., chain saw operations, planting, trim and cultivate trees, shrubs, aquatic plants, etc. Prepares and applies chemical spray applications for fertilizing, weed abatement and fire abatement, etc.; removes brush and other debris from natural areas for fire abatement; picks up and removes trash and other debris; and other related duties. Provides oversight of pre-spike preparation and implementation of spike logistics, as needed. Works with the NBS Public Lands Manager and Director to identify new public lands training and project work for LCC corpsmembers. Assists in the planning and technical implementation of all public lands’ projects alongside the NBS Public Lands Manager. Supervises crew, including implementation of policies and procedures consistent with LCC Corpsmember Handbook and Public Lands partner requirements. Mentors and coaches corpsmembers to resolve behavioral issues and other barriers to their project experience. Implements disciplinary measures when needed within the guidelines of the Corpsmember Handbook. Serves as a role model for corpsmembers, including active involvement and support of their public lands conservation and trail project experience and educational goals. Administers safety training related to the worksite, assuring the safety of corpsmembers during all work tasks. Effectively structures workload to meet deadlines. Develops, leads and maintains a positive and productive work environment. Delivers high quality and timely completion of all jobs, projects and related services to the satisfaction of the Public Lands Agency project partners and LCC management. Ensures that assigned vehicle, tools, equipment, materials and supplies are maintained and in good and safe working order. Completes and submits all required forms and reports (e.g. daily crew assignment log and report; log, vehicle logs and gas receipts, equipment repair orders corpsmember evaluations, corpsmember award nominations, etc.) are completed in a timely manner and submitted as required to supervisor. Safely transports corpsmembers to and from project worksites throughout Fresno County and surrounding counties in LCC vehicle; ability to connect and safely pull bumper-pull or gooseneck, dual axle trailer. Occasional spike projects may be required due to location of project. Travels for agency business using reliable transportation. Maintains regular attendance and punctuality. Works evenings and weekends as required. Performs other duties as assigned. To execute this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EXPERIENCE: • Minimum of four (4) years paid work experience related to conservation corps/natural resources management/forestry or related field/industry required. Ability to obtain CPR and First Aid certification within sixty (60) days of employment and maintain current thereafter. Ability to satisfactorily pass criminal background checks including but not limited to California Department of Justice and FBI. Physical Examination – Physician clearance required. Chain saw certification (Federal S-212) required. Must possess or obtain a Qualified Applicators License (QAL) within one hundred and twenty (120) days of employment and maintain current thereafter. QAL includes passing exams for (1) Laws, Regulations, and Basic Principles of Safe and Effective Pesticide Use (Category - Core) and, (2) Forest (Category - E). Familiar with standard inventory practices, effectively minimizing loss of tools, equipment, supplies and materials. Effective written and verbal communication and organizational skills; ability to effectively communicate with corpsmembers, staff and management in a professional manner. Demonstrated experience in training and supervising corpsmembers on proper use, handling, and maintenance of job related vehicle, tools, equipment, supplies, and materials. Demonstrated experience in training on customer service skills. Strong organizational ability. Goal orientated; possess ability to structure workload to meet deadlines. Demonstrated experience in developing, leading and maintaining a positive and productive work environment. Demonstrated experience in leading and effectively supervising unskilled young adults with multiple barriers to employment. Ability to be a leader and a positive role model for corpsmembers; be actively involved and supportive of their vocational training and educational goals. Demonstrated experience in mentoring and coaching corpsmembers to resolve behavioral issues and other barriers to their vocational field training and other corps requirements; implement disciplinary measures when needed within the guidelines of the Corpsmember Handbook. Demonstrated interest in and dedication to serving the community; a basic understanding of poverty, its causes and conditions and impact on individuals and communities is essential. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and related business software. Strong organizational skills. Able to implement work plans to achieve goals and objectives. Willing to work non-traditional hours and days to meet the needs of this position. Maintain valid California driver's license and the minimum auto insurance as required by state law, or reliable transportation. For those driving agency vehicles, must maintain insurability under agency policy. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk/hike on uneven terrain including riverbed, foothills and mountain trails on average of five (5) miles per day, and on occasion up to up to 10 miles per day. The employee is regularly required to balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or sit; use hands and fingers to handle or grasp or feel; and talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 or more pounds. The employee may be required to backpack on occasion – pack weighing up to 75 lbs. The employee is required to tent camp – sleep on the ground and is subject to overnight camping situations of one or more days on occasion. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee is frequently exposed to and required to walk/hike on uneven, rough terrain, riverbed, foothills and mountain trails and may include walking on areas such as driveways, stairs, ramps, gravel and dirt areas, and other steep unpaved inclines, etc. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to loud depending on work and camp activities.
