Job DescriptionJob Title: Phlebotomist (Poughkeepsie)Job Description This role provides expert support in blood collection and specimen preparation to ensure accurate diagnostic testing and high-quality patient care. The phlebotomist performs venipuncture and other specimen collections with a focus on patient comfort, safety, and accuracy, working with individuals across a wide range of ages and backgrounds. Responsibilities • Perform blood draws using appropriate techniques, including straight needles and butterfly needles, while minimizing patient discomfort., • Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, according to established procedures and protocols., • Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients to help them feel informed and at ease., • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accurate identification and processing., • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and laboratory protocols., • Verify all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against orders or scripts to ensure 100% accuracy before processing., • Package specimens for transport, following all required procedures to maintain specimen integrity., • Store specimen samples at the required temperature, place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes, and follow protocol-specific procedures for transport., • Record maintenance data, perform decontamination tasks, and update patient information accurately and in a timely manner., • Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders related to laboratory testing and specimen handling., • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and follow all applicable safety and regulatory guidelines., • Wear appropriate attire and required protective equipment while performing all duties., • Attend annual department trainings to maintain current knowledge of procedures, regulations, and best practices., • Answer telephone calls, provide laboratory results as appropriate, and respond to inquiries in a professional manner.Essential Skills, • 2–3 years of experience performing blood draws., • Proficiency in phlebotomy, including venipuncture with straight needles., • Experience labeling, centrifuging, and processing specimens in a clinical or laboratory setting., • Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes., • Strong administrative skills and high attention to detail for documentation and data entry., • Ability to understand and follow physicians’ orders for laboratory tests., • Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations related to specimen collection, handling, and safety., • Strong communication skills to clearly and courteously explain procedures to patients., • Ability to handle a variety of patient populations across a wide demographic.Additional Skills & Qualifications, • Experience with infant and pediatric blood draws is a plus., • Experience with specimen processing beyond blood draws is beneficial., • Comfort with reading and relaying laboratory results by phone., • Willingness to travel within the state as needed for the role.Work Environment This position follows a primarily weekday schedule, working Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with every other Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The role may involve in-state travel and provides variety for those who enjoy a change of scenery. The environment involves working with laboratory equipment such as centrifuges and specimen storage units, as well as handling biological specimens under established safety protocols. Appropriate professional attire and required protective equipment are expected while on duty. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Beacon, NY. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
