Job Description THE ORGANIZATION The Center for Justice Innovation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing community safety and racial justice. Since 1996, we’ve worked alongside communities, courts, and those most directly affected by the justice system to build stronger, healthier, and more equitable neighborhoods. With a team of over 900 staff and an annual budget of $130 million, the Center carries out its mission through three core strategies: • Operating Programs that pilot new ideas and address local challenges;, • Conducting original research to evaluate what works—and what doesn’t; and THE OPPORTUNITY Brooklyn Justice Initiatives (BJI), the largest operating project of the Center, seeks to re-engineer the experience of criminal court in Brooklyn, New York, by providing judges and attorneys meaningful alternatives to bail, fines, and jail sentences. Operating out of Kings County Criminal Court and community-based offices, BJI is a team of social service providers, court-based resource coordinators, mental health practitioners, compliance specialists, and others who seek to improve the quality of justice. Supervised Release offers an alternative to jail by providing pretrial supervision, case management, and voluntary social services to people charged with misdemeanor and felony offenses, and in doing so, uses an arrest as a window of opportunity to change the direction of a participant’s life, avoiding the harmful effects of incarceration. Program participants are monitored to ensure their appearance at court dates and mandatory programming, and receive referrals to services like job training, drug treatment, and mental health counseling. BJI seeks a Case Manager for the borough’s Supervised Release Program (SRP) Brownsville/East New York office. Reporting to Supervising Case Manager, Case Manager is the front line of service delivery and key to ensuring that the program meets its mandate. Specifically, the Case Manager will supervise SRP participants according to their assigned tier and level; work with participants to identify and address barriers to compliance and court attendance; conduct outreach to participants, court stakeholders, community-based service providers, and collateral contacts; connect participants to appropriate services in the community to support their stabilization, and ensure accurate and timely court reporting on participants’ compliance with program requirements. Accurate and timely data entry is a core responsibility for this position. Additionally, the Case Manager will co-facilitate pro-social and psycho-educational groups. Neighbors in Action is seeking a Violence Interrupter for the Save Our Streets (S.O.S.) Crown Heights program. Reporting to the Outreach Worker Supervisor, the Violence Interrupter will work individually and as part of a team to prevent neighborhood shootings and killings. They will provide conflict mediation services and serve as conduits to the program’s Outreach Workers who work with program participants on a long-term basis. Reporting to the Coordinator of Court Operations, the Case Manager will be responsible for coordinating new referrals, conducting intakes and screenings, reengaging former and existing participants to complete mandated services, orienting new participants to the Midtown Community Justice Center, and scheduling participants for services. The Case Manager will also be responsible for providing one-on-one case management support to participants in need of services. Once a participant is enrolled in programming, the Case Manager will provide regular written updates and compliance reports to the court, including to the judge, clerks, defense attorneys, and prosecutors. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: • Conduct comprehensive needs-based intakes and assessments for clients referred to Midtown Community Justice Center and from other Center project sites;, • Schedule participants for mandated social services and/or community engagement sessions;, • Maintain caseload of CJA participants and provide support with completing court mandates, including care coordination with outside providers;, • Conduct case management sessions and make referrals for a variety of social service needs including linkages to harm reduction/substance use and mental health services, housing, employment, benefits, and more;, • Maintain a comprehensive and up-to-date list of referral resources that offer a wide range of programs and services;, • Enter and maintain accurate data entry in CJA’s electronic case management database including outreach, case information, intakes, attendances, and case outcome data;, • Provide written updates for court stakeholders for all court-involved participants; Provide resource coordination coverage in the courtroom, as needed;, • Collaborate and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, prosecutors, defense attorneys, and other court and programmatic staff;, • Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation, as needed;, • Manage administrative functions of the front desk and greet guests, as needed;, • Participate in group supervision, staff meetings, site visits, and trainings;, • Actively create, promote, and maintain a respectful, inclusive, and anti-racist work environment;, • Participate in group supervision, staff meetings, site visits and trainings;, • Assist with other programmatic and administrative tasks to support Midtown Community Court, as needed;, • Actively create, promote, and maintain a respectful, inclusive, and anti-racist work environment;, • Work with all program staff and teams to ensure continuity of services for participants;, • Participate in occasional evening and weekend community meetings; and, • Additional tasks as necessary.Qualifications:, • Bachelor’s degree or a minimum of 3-4 years of experience working in a social service setting;, • Must be fluent in English and Spanish, with proficiency in both written and verbal communication is required;, • Experience working in a court or criminal justice setting strongly preferred;, • Experience with drug/alcohol treatment, harm reduction, mental health services, co-occurring disorders utilizing a trauma-informed and anti-oppressive practice required;, • Ability to effectively work with diverse client populations, as a team member in a multiracial setting;, • Ability to be highly organized with excellent time management skills;, • Excellent writing skills and attention to detail required;, • Strong organizational and time management skills;, • Commitment to, and experience using, holistic and strengths-based approaches, meeting participants where they are, as well as the ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds in a culturally responsive manner; and Position Location: Midtown Manhattan. Compensation: The compensation range for this position is $52,000 - $58,000 and is commensurate with experience.
