Title: UB Counselor - PT Department: TRiO Reports To: Director, TRIO Programs Position Type: Staff Position Summary: Under the leadership of the Trio Director, the Upward Bound Counselor provides academic, career, and educational counseling, as well as assistance with completing the college admissions and financial aid process. The counselor also provides motivational support and acts as an advocate for program participants. Other services coordinated by the UB Counselor include academic instruction, mentoring, and tutoring. The Upward Bound Counselor is responsible for the effective implementation and achievement of all goals, objectives, and standards associated with the Upward Bound Program as outlined by the US Department of Education. During the academic year, there are 26 to 28 sessions on Saturdays that run from 8:30 am until 2:30 pm. During the summer a six-week summer program is conducted, with four of those weeks being residential. Given the extensive needs of BSA’s students, the model – which is unique among New York City charter schools – goes above and beyond the classroom through a formalized partnership with The Door, one of the country’s premier youth development organizations. BSA is housed within The Door so that students have facilitated and consistent access to The Door’s complete range of programming on site including: reproductive and primary healthcare and education, mental health counseling and crisis assistance, legal advice and representation, tutoring and homework help, college preparation services, job training and placement, supportive housing, sports and recreational activities, arts, and nutritious meals – all for free, completely confidential, and under one roof. Coaches meet young people “where they are” and build a trusting relationship with them using an authentic, trauma-informed, and strength-based approach, often in partnership with colleagues at our Non-Secure Detention program. In addition to providing weekly emotional support, Coaches help young people make progress toward their academic, career development, housing/independent living, and other life goals. When a young person is unsure of their goals/interests, Coaches help them explore and expose them to potential opportunities. They then help young people connect to schools, programs, and opportunities that align with their goals/interests, encourage persistence in those settings, and plan/prepare for the next step on their journey. Coaches celebrate young people’s progress; if something doesn’t work out, Coaches help young people reflect and connect to the next opportunity. Major Duties: • Build and maintain relationships with approximately 15 young people at any given time., • Meet with newly admitted youth within 48-72 hours to begin developing an academic/vocational/educational support plan., • Provide ongoing social/emotional support. The Jail Population Review Program reviews incarcerated individuals for opportunities for pretrial release or case resolution. The team provides critical information to prosecutors, defense attorneys and judges at the earliest possible juncture so they can engage in meaningful dialogue before an individual spends weeks or months in jail. THE OPPORTUNITY This postdoctoral fellowship in forensic psychology is a collaboration between the Center and Columbia University that focuses primarily on forensic assessment with an opportunity to provide psychotherapy to individuals re-entering the community from incarceration. Postdoctoral fellows conduct forensic assessments mainly for the Jail Population Review Program. The Jail Population Review Program provides a number of clinical consultation services, including independent clinical assessment, review of medical records, and psychological testing when indicated. The postdoctoral fellowship is a one to two-year, full-time program providing advanced training at the intersection of psychology and law. Fellows gain supervised experience conducting psychological evaluations in the criminal court context, primarily brief and comprehensive clinical assessments of incarcerated people, as well as violence risk assessments (general violence, intimate partner violence, and sexual violence) using the Structured Professional Judgement (SPJ) approach, criminogenic risk and needs assessments, and mitigation psychological evaluations. Fellows also conduct psychological evaluations and testing to assist the courts in developing treatment plans for those involved in court-mandated treatment, such as mental health courts or other alternative-to-incarceration programs. In collaboration with Columbia University, fellows may conduct psychotherapy with one participant of the Columbia Reentry Initiative under the supervision of Columbia’s faculty or audit a graduate level forensic psychology course at Columbia University (Forensic Assessment or Correctional Psychology). The Columbia Reentry Initiative at the Dean Hope Center for Educational and Psychological Services at Teachers College is a no-cost, evidence-based and trauma-informed psychological treatment program designed to support adults reentering to the community following incarceration. Postdoctoral Psychologists attend weekly multidisciplinary case discussions and monthly didactic seminars covering topics such as case law relevant to forensic psychology, report writing for legal audiences, cultural considerations in forensic work, and other topics related to forensic assessment. Postdoctoral Psychologists report to the Supervising Forensic Psychologist and receive clinical supervision from the Supervising Forensic Psychologist and the Senior Director of Forensic Psychology in order for the candidate to become licensed within 18 months of employment. Of note, this is a postdoctoral position and therefore a full-time position after licensure is not guaranteed. The Postdoctoral Psychologist will work with stakeholders, including judges, defense attorneys, prosecutors, special jurisdiction courts, ATI programs, Correctional Health Services, and the Department of Correction. This role presents a unique opportunity to be part of a groundbreaking systemic reform initiative. This role involves navigating and constructively engaging with differing and, at times, competing stakeholder perspectives.
