Job Title: Senior Controls Engineer – PLC/SCADA \n Location: Winchcombe, Gloucestershire \n Salary: Up to £68,000 - Negotiable \n Contract: Permanent | Full-time \n Travel: Approximately 50% across the UK, Ireland and occasionally worldwide \n \n Design complex control systems from the ground up - Are you an experienced Controls Engineer who can develop complex PLC, HMI and SCADA systems from scratch? \n \n We are recruiting on behalf of a growing specialist engineering business that designs, manufactures and installs bespoke control systems and automated machinery. \n This is not a maintenance-focused position. You will be responsible for developing control solutions from the ground up, taking projects from initial concept through programming, panel build, installation, commissioning and final handover. \n \n You will work on everything from standalone control panels to intricate turnkey automation systems, collaborating closely with mechanical and electrical design engineers. \n \n There is also an excellent opportunity to develop your industrial robotics knowledge, particularly with FANUC systems. Existing robotics experience would be advantageous, but a genuine desire and ability to learn is equally important. \n \n The role \n\n • Designing and programming complex PLC control systems from scratch.\n, • Developing PLC software using Allen-Bradley Studio 5000.\n, • Programming HMI, touchscreen, industrial network and SCADA systems.\n, • Working with Siemens TIA Portal, where required.\n, • Developing control architectures for bespoke machinery and turnkey automation projects.\n, • Working closely with mechanical and electrical engineers to produce complete technical solutions.\n, • Liaising with internal panel builders to ensure systems are manufactured to the required specification.\n, • Installing, testing and commissioning machinery at customer sites.\n, • Servicing, diagnosing and resolving faults on existing systems.\n, • Taking ownership of selected projects from concept and design through build, commissioning and handover.\n, • Managing project priorities, technical risks and customer communication.\n, • Training and mentoring other members of the engineering team.\n, • Ensuring all projects are delivered safely, on time and to the highest possible standard.\n\n \n Essential experience \n\n • Proven industrial controls engineering experience within machinery or manufacturing.\n, • Strong experience programming complex PLC systems from the ground up.\n, • Advanced knowledge of Allen-Bradley Studio 5000.\n, • Experience developing HMI and SCADA software.\n, • Experience with industrial networks, including EtherNet/IP and PROFINET.\n, • A practical understanding of automated machinery and manufacturing processes.\n, • Experience installing and commissioning control systems at customer sites.\n, • The ability to diagnose complex software, controls and machinery faults.\n, • Experience working directly with customers, suppliers and multidisciplinary engineering teams.\n\n \n Note - This position requires proven industrial experience and would not suit a maintenance-only engineer, academic researcher or recent graduate without relevant machinery-controls experience. \n \n Experience with Siemens TIA Portal would be highly advantageous. \n \n Desirable experience \n\n • FANUC industrial robotics.\n, • Programming or integrating other industrial robotic systems.\n, • EPLAN electrical design.\n, • Packaging systems.\n, • Plastics-processing machinery.\n, • Machine vision systems.\n, • International machinery installation and commissioning.\n, • Technical project management.\n\n \n Existing robotics experience is not essential. However, you must have a genuine interest in developing your skills in industrial robotics and the self-motivation to learn. \n \n You should be: \n\n • A tenacious and methodical problem-solver.\n, • Highly attentive to detail.\n, • Inquisitive and motivated to develop your technical knowledge.\n, • Comfortable working autonomously with minimal supervision.\n, • Equally effective within a close-knit engineering team.\n, • Confident taking ownership while recognising when support is required.\n, • Presentable, articulate and comfortable representing the company at customer sites.\n, • Able to explain complex technical information clearly.\n, • Flexible, dependable and willing to contribute beyond narrowly defined responsibilities.\n\n \n You must have fluent written and spoken English, with the ability to communicate effectively with customers, suppliers and colleagues. \n \n Location and travel \n \n The position is based near Winchcombe, Gloucestershire. Applicants must already live within a realistic commuting distance or be genuinely prepared to relocate. \n Travel and working away from home account for approximately 50% of the role.
