Main Purpose: As a key member of the global Live Engineering team, the Live Engineer is responsible for the design, build, testing, and delivery of live and occasional use broadcast services worldwide. The role is both proactive - anticipating technical needs, driving improvements, and supporting innovation, and reactive - responding swiftly to operational challenges and escalations. Working closely with internal teams across regions, the Live Engineer ensures robust solutions, seamless service delivery, and effective support for critical live events. By adhering to company standards and collaborating with colleagues, the Live Engineer directly supports the Director, Live Engineering in achieving strategic objectives, operational excellence, and continuous improvement across the broadcast organisation. The role is part of a multi-regional engineering team that adopts a ‘follow-the-sun’ project and support model to ensure coverage for Encompass’ regional operations. Principal Responsibilities: Technical Delivery & Support • Proactively configure, set up, and test broadcast systems and services, preparing for both planned deployments and unexpected incidents, in line with global standards and best practices., • Provide 3rd line support and act as an escalation point for complex live broadcast issues, ensuring rapid resolution and minimal service disruption to uphold operational excellence., • Implement technical changes to the broadcast chain based on customer requests, internal findings, or root cause analysis, ensuring changes are documented, risks are assessed, and the Director is kept informed., • Attend and contribute to internal, technical, supplier, and customer meetings, representing engineering interests and sharing expertise to support collaborative decision-making., • Participate in kick-off and design sessions, collaborating with internal teams to shape technical solutions that align with strategic goals and standardisation initiatives., • Arrange cable schedules, produce detailed low-level designs, and create rack elevation diagrams for new and existing systems, supporting the groups drive for consistency and scalability., • Engage with the network team, peers and other technical specialists as required to deliver complex broadcast solutions., • Update and produce comprehensive end-to-end documentation for handover to operations and support teams, ensuring clarity, completeness, and compliance with company standards., • Lead proof of concept initiatives and complex testing prior to deployment, validating new technologies and workflows to support innovation and continuous improvement. Collaboration & Communication • Work closely with Operations, Support Engineering, PMO, Solution Architects, and other internal teams to ensure seamless project delivery and operational readiness, supporting the groups vision for global alignment., • Facilitate knowledge sharing and process alignment across global teams, contributing to continuous improvement and standardisation., • Escalate, open tickets, and follow up with internal and external parties to resolve issues efficiently and maintain service quality, ensuring transparency and accountability. Standards & Compliance • Ensure all work adheres to company policies, SOPs, and security standards, maintaining compliance with industry best practices for live broadcast environments and supporting the groups governance responsibilities., • Contribute to the standardisation of technology, tools, and processes across regions, enabling the groups drive global consistency and efficiency. Additional Requirements • Point of escalation for major customer impacting issues, • Strong judgement, critical thinking, communication, and adaptability Experience / Knowledge: • Strong understanding of the end-to-end live broadcast chain and its operational requirements., • Working knowledge of UHD, HDR, SDR, colour conversion processes, SCTE, Dolby, captions/subtitles, and standards conversion., • Familiarity with Playout, MCR, and Streaming environments., • Knowledge of fiber, internet, and satellite contribution/distribution., • Experience with compression and IP signal flows., • Proficient in troubleshooting and escalation processes., • Working knowledge of live broadcast control interfaces and systems., • Ability to assess risk and make sound judgements under pressure., • Experience in escalating, opening tickets, and following up with internal and external stakeholders.
