Were looking for a Materials Development Research Engineer with a strong non-metallic materials engineering background, to support the production and development of next generation composite aero structures, ice protection and transparency products. You will draw on your diverse engineering background and product lifecycle awareness to progress a variety of research activity in the TRL1-6 range. The role will provide a deep understanding of the interactions between processing parameters and material properties of Acrylics, Polycarbonates and adhesives, being able to guide new technology test plans and process/product development. The areas of activity cover but is not limited to: Electro-thermal systems and Electro-mechanical systems, Specialist materials and coating systems, Embedded and structural composites, Aircraft transparencies, Icing modelling and analysis, Sensing and data acquisition, Electrical and software control systems and digital engineering / manufacturing. This role is to provide analysis and design data to support ice protection system design through modelling and simulation of in-flight icing behaviour of aircraft surfaces, or representative surfaces. It is further expected that the role holder develop an in-depth understanding of the icing wind tunnel facility capabilities, and provide consultation and support to customers and other third party users ensuring testing is conducted in line with relevant standards and specifications and contributing to test reports as required. This expertise is to be developed through understanding icing physics and aircraft ice protection philosophies (particularly electrothermal), and through practical experimentation and modelling verification using the research icing wind tunnel.The successful candidate should have a broad engineering knowledge base but have a desire to specialise and in time develop the in depth knowledge to become a subject matter expert in icing analysis and testing, being able to support next generation ice protection system designs. The Chief Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for leading the Industrialisation elements of New product development and/or transfer of work programmes from initial RFP response through to LCG7 within an IPT, working within a structured project / programme environment. The Chief Manufacturing Engineer holds technical accountability for project and programme deliverables, ensuing high standards and due diligence of industrialisation content. Specific responsibilities include generating manufacturing cost assessment for bids, creating and validating manufacturing system design and layouts, implementation and manufacturing system establishment including equipment, tooling, and methods to deliver a capable manufacturing system meeting programme Quality, Rate, and Manufacturing cost requirements (SQDC) utilising APQP tools and value stream design principles; as well as ensuring all regulatory, customer and internal GKN policy requirements are met. This work also extends to advanced planning and contribution to Technology programmes to establish / evaluate manufacturing methods for emerging technologies up to and including to TRL6.Specific outcomes.The CME NPI directly manages and leads a team of Industrialisation engineers, Industrial Architects and process development Research engineers who are deployable to projects and programmes as required, and provides functional governance for resources seconded into NPI / ToW programmes. This role is focussed on delivering solutions for the Luton manufacturing site for both Ice Protection systems and Transparencies product lines, however it is anticipated that collaboration with other sites and teams will be required to maximise impact and best practice learning.
